Open Enrollment Begins
Wednesday, Nov. 1
This year's Open Enrollment period — during which employees can make changes to their health and welfare plans online — is Nov. 1-21. Any adjustments made will take effect on Jan. 1, 2007. The Lab's Benefits Office will host a vendor fair on Thursday, Nov. 2, from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm in Perseverance Hall, as well as a series of Open Enrollment employee presentations:

Safety Pitfalls Fill
Haunted Mansion
To help celebrate Halloween and improve safety at the Lab, the Facilities Division's WOW (Workers Observing Workers) Team is hosting a haunted mansion in Perseverance Hall Tuesday, Oct. 31, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is designed to promote injury prevention and awareness of at-risk behaviors among employees using "scary" displays of industrial accidents. Add to the fun by showing up in costume.

Drilling May Provide
Global Warming Solution
By Janet Wilson
Surrounded by cornfields and cows, Thornton, CA, a gas-and-go exit off Interstate 5 south of Sacramento, seems an unlikely place to solve global warming. But for months, researchers, including Berkeley Lab earth scientists Sally Benson and Larry Myer, have been quietly negotiating with a local farming family to bury carbon dioxide below their tomato fields northeast of town. Full story.
