SHARES Campaign,
Runaround Today
Lab employees are invited to don their sneakers and participate in the annual Runaround race today, which begins at noon at the Firehouse. After the race, enjoy refreshments and entertainment on the cafeteria lawn. And be sure to stop by the SHARES booth to make a donation to a charitable cause. SHARES (Science for Health, Assistance, Resources, Education and Services) starts today and runs through Nov. 3. Representatives of selected charities will be on hand. Those not attending the Runaround can donate online or by filling out a donation form, which can be obtained in the cafeteria lobby and in buildings 84, 90, and 937. Failure to Control
Hazardous Energy Source
In designing and building an electrical junction box, a Lab employee failed to properly control a hazardous energy source. The employee received an electrical shock because of the improper hazard controls. Lab staff must consider all hazards and implement proper controls. All hazards must be controlled through engineering or administrative controls. Due to the nature of Lab work and equipment, staff should continuously assess hazards, always assume hazards are present, and proceed with caution. $4 Million for Biomass
Genomics Research
The Departments of Energy and Agriculture recently announced $4 million funding for bio-based fuels research that will accelerate the development of alternative fuels. The departments issued a solicitation for research proposals for new plant feedstock genomics research projects. Ray Orbach, DOE Under Secretary for Science, made the announcement at Advancing Renewable Energy: An American Rural Renaissance, a conference jointly hosted by the two agencies in St. Louis. New Model for Breast
Tissue Development
Apropos of National Breast Cancer Awareness month, Berkeley Lab researchers led by Mina Bissell and Celeste Nelson of the Life Sciences Division have created a first-of-its-kind model for studying how breast tissue is shaped and structured during development. The model shows that the development of breast tissue, normal or abnormal, is controlled not only by genetics but also by geometry. This could shed new light on how the misbehavior of only a few cells can facilitate metastatic invasion. Full story.

The ribbon was officially cut this past Wednesday to dedicate the new National Center for X-Ray Tomography (NCXT) at Berkeley Lab's Advanced Light Source. Officials from the Department of Energy and National Institutes for Health, the facility's two funding agencies, were on hand for the ceremony, along with Deputy Lab Director Graham Fleming and ALS Director Roger Falcone. The NCXT, which is headed by Carolyn Larabell of the Physical Biosciences Division, features the first soft x-ray transmission microscope to be designed specifically for biological and biomedical applications. Among its many unique capabilities will be "CAT-scans" for biological cells. Full story.

Flu and Pneumonia
Vaccinations for Staff
Health Services is offering influenza and pneumonia vaccinations on Thursday, Oct. 19 and 26 in Building 26. A vaccination clinic will also be held at the Joint Genome Institute on Oct. 27, and in Building 937 on Nov. 3. All clinics run from 8 a.m. to noon. Call Health Services at (510) 486-6266 to make an appointment for all on- and off-site clinics. Vaccinations are recommended for people over 65, and anyone suffering from heart, lung or other serious health problems, as well as their caregivers. Blackberry Gate
Closed Tomorrow
Lab employees are reminded that Blackberry Gate will be closed to vehicular traffic tomorrow, starting at 7 a.m. and reopening at about 10 a.m. on Sunday. Strawberry and Grizzly Peak gates can be used for exiting the Lab, but only Strawberry gate will be open to incoming traffic. For more information, contact Jack Heffernan (x5993).
'Stores' Officially
Closes Today
As previously announced, the Lab's Central Storeroom closes today. Employees can purchase materials formerly ordered through Stores using the new online software eBuy (requires an LDAP username and password and a valid Project ID number). Other items can be obtained through Business to-Business (B2B) contracts — see a list here. The Stores closure is part of the Laboratory Supply Chain Management Initiative. Departments requiring reports on their history of Storehouse issues can contact Steve Black at x7072 or Bill Llewellyn at x7726.
