Program Fair Highlights
Earth Science Week
Berkeley Lab’s Earth Sciences Division will honor national Earth Science Week (Oct. 8-14) with a program fair at the cafeteria on Wednesday. All employees are invited to learn more about the division’s research in climate studies, carbon sequestration, earthquake prediction, nuclear waste disposal, microbes and ecology, oil and gas recovery, water, and geothermal energy. Scientists will be available at tables on the lawn between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to answer questions. Go here to learn about the national celebration.
SHARES Campaign
Kicks Off on Friday
The annual charitable giving program called SHARES – Science for Health, Assistance, Resources, Education and Services – will begin its ninth campaign on Friday, kicking off in conjunction with the Runaround. As in prior years, Berkeley Lab employees will be asked to consider donating to a non-profit agency, which can be chosen from a list of SHARES local science-related organizations or from hundreds of other regional and national programs. Electronic and hard-copy giving will both be available. Get information and visit representatives of selected charities at the post-run celebration at the cafeteria during the noon hour.

The ALS Users' Meeting Program Committee and the Friends of Science are jointly hosting a lecture by Lab physical bioscientist Carolyn Larabell titled, "Imaging the Cellular Universe." The lecture, which takes place at 7:30 p.m. tonight in the Building 50 Auditorium, will provide a unique glimpse into the intricate structures and functions of cells revealed by microscopy. The media have a central role in telling the story of research in particle physics. According to a Viewpoint article in the latest edition of the CERN Courier, "We need to put aside our differences and keep our eyes on the big picture if we are to make the most of this vast resource." IT Division To Release
New BLIS Portal
The BLIS Portal, which provides personalized, single point of access to a broad array of online resources and services, has been redesigned for ease of use. The new version will automatically replace the existing portal this Wednesday. New features include a Google-style Lab site map that allows users to search for buildings and their driving directions, e-mail storage usage reports that display users' remaining free storage, a list of various Lab applications and forms, and a list of all of users' eRooms. The look, feel and content of the new portal was developed with the input of pilot users and various Lab user groups.
