WORLD OF SCIENCE

State Losing Innovative Edge; Remedies Sought

California is home to one-fourth of the nation's billionaires and the sixth- largest economy in the world. And Californians have higher incomes than people nationwide. Yet the state spends less on educating its students than two-thirds of the country. And while California scientists won three Nobel Prizes this year, including Berkeley Lab's George Smoot, many worry whether this legacy will continue. President Bush launched the American Competitive Initiative to address deficiencies in math and science education. Full story.

Steps Urged to Prevent
Science Journal Fraud

Fraudulent stem cell reports from a South Korean scientist in 2004 could have been prevented by extra review procedures, according to a panel appointed by Science, the journal that published the claims. Among the suggestions: a risk assessment method should be developed to flag high-visibility papers, authors should specify their individual contributions to a paper, more raw data should be published online, and journals should establish common standards for reviewing papers. Full story.

SAFETY LESSON LEARNED

Check Gas Cylinder
Caps Before Moving

A recent incident at another DOE facility highlights the need to check gas cylinder caps prior to moving or handling.  If the cap is loose or does not fit properly, it can fall or come off suddenly while handling. This can lead to such injuries as broken teeth, facial lacerations, and smashed toes and feet. A similar type of incident occurred at Berkeley Lab several years ago, so be sure to check caps to prevent it from happening again. Employees are also reminded that valve stem caps should be stored safely and securely while the gas cylinder is in service.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Input on New Travel
Process Still Sought

Do you travel on behalf of the Laboratory? Did you take the short survey announced earlier this week in Today at Berkeley Lab requesting input on a new travel process and expense reimbursement system?  If not, the survey will remain active until the close of business tomorrow.  For more information, contact Carla Garbis.

Lodging for Lab
Guests, Employees

Lodging is now available to Berkeley Lab employees and guests at the Advanced Light Source Apartments. The apartments, located at Oxford St. and Hearst Ave. in the Berkeleyan Apartment Building, include two bedrooms with two beds each, kitchen, living room, and bathroom. The rates include linens, cookware and dishes, cable television, Internet access and a weekly cleaning service. The apartments are also close to Lab shuttle stops. Go here for more information.

Congressional Fellowship Applicants Sought

Members of the physics community who want to spend a year learning about the inner workings of the federal government should consider applying to the American Institute of Physics and the American Physical Society Congressional Science Fellowship programs. The Fellows will assist in providing technical advice and analysis in the conduct of national policy. All application materials for the 2007-08 fellowship program must be postmarked by Jan. 15, 2007. Go here for more information on applying.

Emergency Numbers
Included in Today

Starting today, Lab emergency phone numbers will be included in each edition of Today at Berkeley Lab. The numbers, x7911 for emergencies and x6999 for non-life threatening incidents, will be listed at the bottom of TABL, under the "Emergency Info" banner, along with security level information.
