IN THE NEWS

Rubin

Neanderthal DNA
Story Airs Locally

KTVU-Channel 2 is among the hundreds of media outlets that have covered last week's news of the analysis of  DNA from the thighbone marrow of a Neanderthal man. Reporter John Fowler went to the Joint Genome Institute, where Berkeley Lab scientist Eddy Rubin and colleagues conducted sequencing of the DNA, and interviewed Rubin about what he called "a DNA time machine." Go here to view the report.

Lab, Corporation Get
NIH Funds for Chip

Holton
Fluidigm Corporation in South San Francisco and Berkeley Lab have received funding from the National Institutes of Health to develop a microfluidic chip for collection of in situ X-ray diffraction data. The diffraction-capable chip will be designed so that protein crystals can be screened at a synchrotron without having to first remove them from the chip. James Holton, with the Lab's Physical Biosciences Division, is a principal investigator. Full story.
UC UPDATE

Regents’ 2007-08
Budget Includes Helios

The University of California’s proposed $3.324 billion state budget for 2007-08, approved by the Regents last week, includes a $30 million capital request for Berkeley Lab’s Helios research project. The state lease revenue bonds, if approved by the Governor and Legislature, would fund the construction of a new energy/nano research building that would be central to the Helios initiative — converting solar energy into carbon-neutral forms of environmentlaly friendly energy. Go here to read the UC budget press release.

Universe’s ‘Dark Energy’
9 Billion Years Old

Supernova
Berkeley Lab's Saul Perlmutter is referenced in a story on new Hubble Space Telescope research that has discovered that billions of years before this mysterious antigravity overcame cosmic gravity and sent the galaxies scooting apart like muscle cars departing a tollbooth, it was already present in space, affecting the evolution of the cosmos. The results, scientists say, provide clues and place new limits on the nature of dark energy, a mystery that has thrown physics and cosmology into turmoil over the last decade. Full story.

Wrinkle in Mysterious
High-Tc Superconductors

Fedorov

Research published in Science last week appears to resolve one mystery in the 20-year study of high-temperature (high Tc) superconductors, materials that lose their resistance to the flow of electricity at relatively high temperatures. The research shows that a "pseudogap" in the energy level of the material's electronic spectrum is the result of the electrons being bound into pairs above the so-called transition temperature to the superconducting state. But these electrons are unable to superconduct because they move incoherently. The study was co-authored by Alexei Fedorov, with Berkeley Lab's Advanced Light Source. Full story.

ANNOUNCEMENT

Safety Celebration

A reception to recognize the efforts by Lab employees to reduce injuries and accidents this past year will be held in the cafeteria today at 2:30 p.m. Staff can enjoy refreshments and pick up information on safety.
