Materials Expert Among 'Scientific American 50'





Tomsia

Antoni Tomsia of the Lab's Materials Sciences Division was recently included in the "2006 Scientific American 50," the magazine’s annual list that recognizes people and organizations with accomplishments in research, business, or policymaking that demonstrate outstanding technological leadership. Tomsia was chosen for his development of a multilayered nacrelike material, which could eventually be used in a myriad of applications for which strength and lightness are imperative, such as dental implants. Library Adds New
Reference Librarian





Golden

Michael Golden — the Lab's new reference desk librarian — is available to assist scientists and staff with queries for online and physical article searches. He can also obtain books and reference materials via in-house, inter-library loan or pay-on-demand services. Golden has a Masters degree in Library and Information Science and eight years experience as an academic reference librarian at University of Missouri, Kansas City, as well as other campuses. He has an additional five years experience as a bench scientist in chemistry. Golden can be reached via e-mail ([email protected]) or phone (x5621).

Grant.gov Workshops Offered for Researchers

The Sponsored Projects Office and Berkeley Lab Institute are sponsoring a lunchtime discussion session on Friday from noon to 1 p.m. in Perseverance Hall to help researchers and financial and administrative staff gain the tools needed to get started, apply, and submit proposals through Grants.gov. The site is the single access point for over 1,000 grant programs offered by the 26 federal granting agencies. Another session will be held Tuesday, Dec. 5, same time and location. An off-site session takes place at the Berkeley West Biocenter (Potter St.) at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 1, in the Sudar Auditorium.

The biofuel business is booming. Proponents say biofuels could help end dependence on oil imports, boost a sagging agriculture industry, and reduce environmental damage caused by burning fossil fuels. But not everyone agrees that biofuels are the answer to America's 20-million-barrel- a-day oil habit. Critics claim that producing biofuels consumes more energy than it generates, and some warn that converting farmland from food to fuel crops could result in higher food prices and deplete natural resources worldwide. UC Berkeley has been a microcosm of the ongoing debate, as two of its most widely quoted authorities, Dan Kammen and Tad Patzek (a Berkeley Lab earth scientist), are crunching data on opposite sides of campus in an effort to determine the truth about biofuels. Bates, Incumbents
Retain Berkeley Seats

Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates and four of his incumbent colleagues on City Council retained their seats in yesterday's election. Bates, Gordon Wozniak, Linda Maio, Dona Spring and Kriss Worthington all defeated their opponents in the voting, while the lone incumbent in the City of Oakland council election, Patricia Kernighan, also won. Former ALD Dies,
Service Tomorrow





Alpen

Edward Alpen, a distinguished radiation biophysicist with Berkeley Lab, passed away last Friday. He had suffered from complications as a result of radiation therapy for a brain tumor. According to Lab archives, Alpen was appointed associate director of the Lab and head of the Biology and Medicine Division (Donner Lab) in 1975, and is believed to have held these two positions until 1987. The recipient of many awards, including the Distinguished Service Medal of the Department of Defense and the Navy Science Medal for Distinguished Achievement in Science, Alpen was also the author of the highly praised book "Radiation Biophysics." A memorial service will be held at noon tomorrow at Newell Chapel, Cypress Lawn Cemetery, 1370 El Camino Real, Colma, followed by the burial.

American Red Cross 'Safe and Well' Registry

In July, the American Red Cross launched its "Safe and Well" website to provide families with a tool to exchange important information with family and friends in the immediate aftermath of a disaster. The site allows a disaster victim to select and post standard messages that indicate the victim is safe and well and will make contact when able. Those worried about the safety of a victim can access the site, enter either the name and telephone number, or name and complete address of the person in question, and view their "safe and well" messages.
