RIF Status in Facilities
Has Been Concluded

On March 29, the Lab's Facilities Division went into Reduction-In-Force (RIF) status due to budget constraints and a shift in priorities. Workforce reductions were necessary to address these concerns and to achieve maximum efficiencies in their operations. As of last Friday, the division is no longer in RIF status. Employees affected by the RIF were given notice on or before May 25. The Lab will continue the process of trying to find positions for those who received layoff notices.

Meet Tennessee Gock, who's been with the Lab for more than 21 years. She's an administrative assistant for the EH&S Division's Environmental Restoration Program. Lining the walls of her cubicle are drawings she's made of famous people, like Brooke Shields, and of Lab colleagues. She also sings, plays guitar, studies foreign languages, and volunteers for the City of Albany. But she is probably best known for her friendliness and unusual first name. "In Hong Kong, it is fashionable to add English names to Chinese names," Gock explains. "In high school, we were asked to look for the Tennessee Valley in a geography class. I fell in love with the name, and have used it ever since."

Orbach is Confirmed As Science Under Secretary

On Friday, the Senate confirmed the appointment of Ray Orbach as DOE's under secretary of science. Orbach, who served as chancellor of UC Riverside for 10 years before being named to head the Office of Science in 2002, will now oversee all of the department's science activities. The under secretary position is a new one that was established under the Energy Policy Act of 2005 to create a higher profile for science at DOE.
