Malek Kabiriti, left and Levine

Lab, Jordanians
Sign Energy MOU

The Environmental Energy Technologies Division hosted an official delegation of Jordanian energy leaders at the request of the State Department last Wednesday and Thursday. The four-person delegation met with researchers to discuss energy efficiency standards and labeling programs, water, demand response, cool color roof technology, and industrial energy efficiency. They toured the Advanced Windows Test Facility and the Advanced Light Source. On Thursday, Division Director Mark Levine signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Malek Kabariti, president of Jordan's National Energy Research Center, to explore cooperative research and training programs in energy and water efficiency.

WORLD OF SCIENCE

UK Offers Fellowships
For American Post-Docs

The United Kingdom's Royal Society, in cooperation with the Department of Trade and Industry's Office of Science and Technology, is now accepting applications for the North America Incoming Short Visits program. This is a new opportunity for post-docs to visit institutions in the UK for up to eight weeks to initiate collaborations, build networks and gain access to equipment, data observations and ideas. Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the USA or Canada and based in a North American academic research institution or a government laboratory. The application deadline is Thursday, June 1. Go here for more information.

Feedback Loops Point
To Hot 21st Century

Torn
Studies have shown that global climate change can set off positive feedback loops in nature, which amplify warming and cooling trends. Now Berkeley Lab earth scientist Margaret Torn, along with UC Berkeley professor John Harte, have been able to quantify the feedback implied by past increases in natural carbon dioxide and methane gas levels. Their results point to global temperatures at the end of this century that may be significantly higher than current climate models are predicting. Full story.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

'High Tech News'
E-newsletter Launched

The Environmental Energy Technologies Division has created a periodic e-newsletter called High Tech News. The publication describes the Lab's latest research on high-performance buildings for high-tech industries, with a focus on raising the energy performance of critical facilities such as data centers, clean rooms, and laboratories. It also contains links to energy resources, including Pier, Labs for the 21st Century, NYSERDA and CIEE. Go here to view the newsletter. Send e-mail here to get added to the distribution list.

Meeting Tomorrow
For Founders Day Plan

Staff are invited to bring their lunches and ideas to a noon meeting tomorrow in Perseverance Hall to help plan the Lab's Founders Day Celebration. The celebration will take place on Saturday, Aug. 26, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is open to Lab employees and their families and friends. The event marks the 75th anniversary of the Lab. Contact Lyn Hunter if you plan to attend.
