Computing Group Gets
1.8 Million NASA Hours

Day

Members of Berkeley Lab's Center for Computational Sciences and Engineering (CCSE) learned last week that their proposal to study "Interaction of Turbulence and Chemistry in Lean Premixed Combustion" was one of four projects selected to receive time on the 2,048-processor supercomputer "Columbia" at the NASA Ames Research Center. Marc Day is leader of the project. CCSE was awarded 1.8 million hours to "study the dynamics of ultra-lean, turbulent, pre-mixed burners incorporating detailed chemistry and transport for a variety of fuels."

SPECIAL EVENT

Synthetic Biology
Conference in May

The Second International Conference on Synthetic Biology (SB2.0) will take place May 20-22 at UC Berkeley. SB2.0 will bring together a diverse group of participants from a variety of disciplines, including some of the world's leaders in biological engineering, biochemistry, quantitative biology, biophysics, molecular and cellular biology, bioethics, policy and governance, and the biotech industry. A collaborative effort among Berkeley Lab, MIT, UC Berkeley, and UCSF, the conference will promote and guide the constructive development of the field. Go here for more information and to register.

Chu Featured in 'Lehrer
Hour' Education Report

The Public Broadcasting System's "News Hour with Jim Lehrer" on Tuesday evening presented a report on "America's Effort to Improve Math and Science." Among the experts commenting on student preparation and teacher incentives was Berkeley Lab Director Steve Chu. Correspondent Spencer Michaels sought Chu's views as a co-author of a recent National Academy of Sciences report that encouraged greater investments in math and science education. Hoffman

History-Making Women
At Berkeley Lab

March is Women's History Month, and Berkeley Lab has had its share of history-making women. Among the groundbreaking female scientists that have worked here is nuclear scientist Darleane Hoffman. According to the Chemical Heritage Foundation, Hoffman has "chased some of the most elusive forms of matter, called heavy elements. These elements are hard to produce and exist for very short periods of time, yet Hoffman has succeeded in capturing and analyzing them. Studying these fugitive elements, she has made important discoveries about the nature of fission, the atomic process at the heart of nuclear power." Today at Berkeley Lab will feature other women scientists throughout the month.
