Analyzing Data Under
Extreme Conditions
By Katie Gibb

Bishop

Obtaining analytical data has become routine for chemists. Developments in the past few decades have led to accurate and sensitive instruments that deliver time and time again. But there are still some areas this technology simply cannot reach. Imagine an environment so severe that scientists can't survive, where conventional equipment won't work, and collecting simple data is more than just an everyday task. For scientists like Berkeley Lab geologist Jim Bishop — who is currently researching the ocean's biological carbon pump — this challenge is just the beginning.  Full story

Mending Old Bones:
Hope for Osteoporosis
By Meghan Laslocky

Bone afflicted with osteoporosis
Berkeley Lab Materials Scientist Robert Ritchie starts with a basic question: "What does aging do to the structure of bone?" We know the amount of bone diminishes with age, what he calls the quantity issue. But aging also degrades the quality of the bone, making it less resistant to fracture. One in two women and one in four men over the age of 50 will suffer a fracture caused by osteoporosis, the leading bone degenerative disease. Full story.

Sustainable Building
Expert Speaks in D.C.

Fisk
William Fisk, with Berkeley Lab's Environmental Energy Technologies Division, traveled to Washington D.C. in late January to attend the White House Summit on Federal Sustainable Buildings. His presentation, "Economic Benefits of Improved Indoor Air Quality, Health, and Productivity in Sustainable Buildings," explained how a higher ventilation rate of outdoor air is associated with improvements in work performance and reduced respiratory illness and absence. Berkeley Lab was among 25 federal agencies represented at the summit, which culminated in the signing of a first-of-its-kind MOU committing 17 federal agencies and the Executive Office of the President to "leadership in the design, construction, and operation of high-performance and sustainable buildings."
