UAW Seeks to Represent
UC, Lab Postdocs
The United Auto Workers Union (UAW) has begun to visit various UC campuses, including Berkeley Lab, with the objective of organizing postdoctoral fellows. The UAW has been asking postdocs to sign cards to authorize the union to exclusively represent them in contract bargaining. Bill Elkins, Berkeley Lab's Manager, Labor and Employee Relations, said, "The Lab and UC take no position when it comes to the right of employees to form a union. The important thing from the Lab's perspective is that employees make an informed choice." Go here for more details and dates for informational meetings for postdocs and their supervisors. |

Take Precautions During
Hot Summer Days
Indoor and outdoor temperatures at the Lab can become very warm during brief periods throughout the summer and early fall months. To stay cool, staff should wear lightweight, light-colored, loose clothing that allows air to move over the skin's surface, drink plenty of fluids, and eat a light lunch. Those experiencing the onset of a heat-related condition should contact Health Services (x6266). In emergency situations, the Fire Department should be contacted (x7911). For additional information on heat stress, go here or contact Rob Connelly (x4028).

Rostyslav Boutchko, with Thomas Budinger's Nuclear Medicine and Functional Imaging Department (Life Sciences) won the Computer and Instrumentation Council Young Investigator Award at the recent Society of Nuclear Medicine Annual Meeting in San Diego. The title of his talk was "Three- Dimensional Reconstruction of Dynamic Cardiac SPECT Data on a Point Cloud Grid." Boutchko, along with Arkadiusz Sitek and Grant Gullberg, are developing a multi-resolution grid approach to image reconstruction, which may bring forth improvements in data processing, 3D display, and diagnostic quality of medical images and provide direct segmentation and finite element mesh specification for mechanical and electrical modeling of the heart. |
