It's Official: We
Live in Hot Times

Muller

Berkeley Lab physicist Richard Muller is quoted in a June 23 San Francisco Chronicle article that discusses a recent National Academy of Sciences report that substantially supports the findings of a controversial 1998 climate study. The report found that Earth's average temperature has been hotter over the last quarter century than during the previous four centuries and possibly much longer. Muller served as a peer reviewer for the academy's report. Full story.

High-Tech Approach To
Energy Conservation

Tschudi
Tschudi

Bill Tschudi of the Environmental Energy Technologies Division is featured in a June 22 ABC 7 newscast that explores how servers can operate on D.C. power more efficiently than A.C. Early research indicates the savings could be in the millions a year for a large server farm. "It's good public relations, but it also is solving a problem the industry is seeing which is removal of the heat in these data centers, and it's getting to the point where any amount of heat you can eliminate would be a big benefit,” said Tschudi. ANNOUNCEMENTS

SciDac

SciDAC 2006 Meeting Features Lab Research

Berkeley Lab’s research in computer science, computational science, and applied mathematics is well represented at the SciDAC 2006 conference, starting today and ending Thursday in Denver. Lab speakers include John Bell (keynote) and Kathy Yelick of the Computational Research Division (CRD), Rob Ryne of the Accelerator and Fusion Research Division, and Adam Arkin of the Physical Biosciences Division. Seven researchers from CRD, ESnet, and NERSC are presenting posters. The full conference program with links to abstracts is available here.

Staff Should Remove Posters When Expired

One benefit of working at Berkeley Lab is the various activities and events that take place on a nearly daily basis. Advertising these events by placing posters on or next to doors near high-traffic areas is a way to increase attendance. However, event sponsors are asked to take down their posters as soon as possible after the conclusion of the activity to prevent clutter and provide space for others who want to promote their event.

TEAM: Lab to Receive Microscopes in ‘07, ‘08

Dahmen
Dahmen
The Department of Energy has contracted with FEI Co. for four Titan scanning/ transmission electron microscopes (S/TEMs) developed as part of the Transmission Electron Aberration-Corrected Microscope (TEAM) project. The goal of the project is to build the world’s highest resolution S/TEM. The first instruments will be shipped to Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Argonne National Laboratory. The third and fourth will ship to Berkeley Lab in 2007 and 2008. “As the technical goals of this project are coming within reach, the prospect of using these extraordinary capabilities to explore new territory in the nanoworld is creating a great sense of anticipation in the scientific community,” said Uli Dahmen, TEAM project director.
