Enigmatic Object Baffles Supernova Team
By Jeff Hecht

Supernova remnant
An astronomical enigma has been spotted by a team hunting for very distant supernovas for their studies of the early universe. At first glance, the object discovered on Feb. 22 in the constellation Bootes resembled an ordinary supernova. But it kept growing brighter for much too long, and its spectrum was abnormal. The mysterious object was spotted by the Hubble Space Telescope's Advanced Camera for Surveys and took at least 100 days to reach peak brightness, says Kyle Dawson, a physicist with Berkeley Lab. Normal supernovas reach peak brightness about 20 days after the blast. Full story.

National Labs Pursue
Green Technology Use
By Dean Takahashi

From burying greenhouse gases deep underground to finding solutions for truckers who pollute the air while idling, scientists at federal national laboratories are coming up with lots of ideas for environmentally friendly uses of technology. Last week, representatives from three government research labs — including Berkeley Lab — showed off their eco-friendly inventions to venture capitalists and technologists at a conference at SRI International in Menlo Park. They hope to license the technologies to start-ups. As such, they're trying to cash in on the trend where, in an age of rising fuel prices, venture capitalists and entrepreneurs are creating green start-ups. Full story.

COMPUTER UPDATE

LDAP Passwords
Will Expire July 31

All Lab employees are required to change their LDAP (e-mail and calendar) passwords by Monday, July 31. Users can now reset their passwords online using the new Self-Service Password interface. After users change their password, they will then be prompted to create and answer their own secret questions (optional). This will allow users to easily reset their password online at anytime without calling the IT Help Desk. The IT Division will notify users in e-mail before their passwords expire. Go here for details. For questions, call the IT Help Desk (x4357).

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Electrical Switching
Scheduled Tomorrow

Facilities will perform switching on the 115KV electrical distribution system at the Lab (per PG&E's request) tomorrow. The procedures will be transparent to the Lab community and it is highly unlikely that an interruption of power will occur. However, the possibility of an electrical power interruption always exists. Employees should take all necessary precautions. For questions or additional information, contact Dennis Nielsen (x4055).

Mentors Sought
For High Schoolers

High school students with interests in bioscience, medicine, chemistry, engineering, and business administration are still available for six-week mentored summer internships starting Friday, June 30 and ending Friday, Aug 11. Those interested in mentoring these students can call Rollie Otto (x5325) or Joe Crippen (x5816) in the Center for Science and Engineering Education. This is the final week for making placements.
