Cyber Team from DOE
Reports Lab is No. 1
A team from the Office of Science conducted a large-scale review of the Lab's cyber security programs last week. The team noted the Lab's accomplishments and recommended a number of improvements. Mike Robertson, the Office of Science's cyber manager, said Berkeley Lab has an impressive cyber security culture, ranking it number one among all DOE labs in this area. "Last week's site visit was valuable for both the Lab and the DOE Office of Security," said Lab Director Steve Chu. "DOE's efforts helped us assess and strengthen our cyber infrastructure. Most importantly, DOE identified Berkeley Lab as exhibiting some of the best practices in cyber security in the DOE complex." Lab CIO Sandy Merola said these results show that the Lab has established effective cyber security that protects the open research environment and adds value to scientific competitiveness. For questions about security, contact your computer security liaison. |

Staff Invited to Join
Fun at Founders Day
While you may have read about plans for the Lab's Founder's Day celebration on Saturday, Aug. 26 in previous issues of Today at Berkeley Lab, consider this an official invitation to all employees, their families, and friends, to attend. The event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., will include entertainment, demonstrations, a kid's area, tours, and information booths, as well as tasty treats and beverages. To aid in the planning of the celebration, staff are asked to RSVP by sending e-mail here. Randomly selected respondents will receive prizes. Those interested in volunteering their time, services, or talents can contact event organizer Lyn Hunter.

Energy Efficiency Pioneer
To Receive Fermi Award
Art Rosenfeld, a physicist who helped jump-start the push for energy-efficient appliances and homes, will receive the Fermi Award from the U.S. government next week. During the OPEC oil crisis of the 1970s, Rosenfeld, a veteran researcher at Berkeley Lab and a member of the California Energy Commission, began to study the amount of energy consumed by appliances, air conditioning systems and buildings. The findings were surprising. Full story.

Groups Reach Halfway
Mark to Health Goals
Earlier this month, 18 "Active for Life" teams reached the mid-year point in their journey towards being healthier. More than 150 employees, from the Hill, the Joint Genome Institute, Berkeley West Biocenter (Potter St.), Calvin Lab (campus) and downtown offices are participating in this program, which seeks to improve health through better eating and increased exercise. To see a list of teams, go here. Those interested in joining can contact Health Care Facilitator Loida Bartolome- Mingao.
