SAFETY NOTE

Avoid Fires: Use
Butt Disposal Cans

A smoldering cigarette started a very small fire on the deck outside Building 50A last Friday.  Fortunately, it was noticed promptly by a passerby and extinguished.  Less than three years ago, another smoldering cigarette caused a small fire on the deck between Trailers 29B & C.  A reminder: smoking is restricted to paved surfaces at least 20 fee away from building openings (RPM 2.23J). Smokers should take advantage of new cigarette butt disposal cans placed around the lab. It's the best way to meet your obligation of safely disposing of cigarettes.  The new cans are made of  fire-resistive plastic, thereby avoiding rust and making them easier to clean.  Never put trash in the can. If they need servicing, call the Work Request Center (x6274).

Industry Gives Support
To Other 'RAD' Lab

Patterson

UC Berkeley has announced a new influx of industry support for its Reliable, Adaptive and Distributed systems laboratory, or RAD Lab, which will be dedicated to creating the next generation of Internet design tools. This corporate support reflects both the importance of the RAD Lab's work and a major shift in the way long-term university research is funded, said David Patterson, a UC Berkeley professor and Berkeley Lab Computational Research Division scientist.
