Avoid Fires: Use
Butt Disposal Cans

A smoldering cigarette started a very small fire on the deck outside Building 50A last Friday.  Fortunately, it was noticed promptly by a passerby and extinguished.  Less than three years ago, another smoldering cigarette caused a small fire on the deck between Trailers 29B & C.  A reminder: smoking is restricted to paved surfaces at least 20 fee away from building openings (RPM 2.23J). Smokers should take advantage of new cigarette butt disposal cans placed around the lab. It's the best way to meet your obligation of safely disposing of cigarettes.  The new cans are made of  fire-resistive plastic, thereby avoiding rust and making them easier to clean.  Never put trash in the can. If they need servicing, call the Work Request Center (x6274).

Berkeley Lab's Dance Club will start an East Coast Swing class on Monday, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Building 51 Lobby (the upstairs entrance to the Bevatron off Lawrence Road). There will also be practice sessions each Wednesday. All classes are free. Beginners are welcome and no experience is necessary. The course will run six to eight weeks depending on progress.

Industry Gives Support
To Other 'RAD' Lab

UC Berkeley has announced a new influx of industry support for its Reliable, Adaptive and Distributed systems laboratory, or RAD Lab, which will be dedicated to creating the next generation of Internet design tools. This corporate support reflects both the importance of the RAD Lab's work and a major shift in the way long-term university research is funded, said David Patterson, a UC Berkeley professor and Berkeley Lab Computational Research Division scientist. Meeting Explores Labs'
Contributions to State

The California Council on Science and Technology (CCST) seeks to create and harness new knowledge frontiers to maintain California's competitive leadership. It will bring together science and academia leaders today at Berkeley Lab to discuss how the state's federal laboratories, including Berkeley Lab, can contribute to progress in innovation, technology transfer, and science and math education. The Department of Energy's Peter Faletra is among the participants in the sessions, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Building 66 Auditorium. Read about CCST here.

Expo to Highlight New
Lab Energy Technologies

Berkeley, Livermore and Los Alamos national labs will be featured on June 13 in Menlo Park at the first "3Labs reNEWable Technology Expo." The marketing sessions will showcase the latest developments in renewable energy and clean technology opportunities. Venture capitalists and industry representatives are invited to the SRI-International Auditorium from 8:30 to 11 a.m. to consider investment opportunities. For more information, go here.
