Minimal Impact to Cells

Nano-sized fluorescent probes that can slip inside living cells and elucidate life’s most fundamental processes, or track the effectiveness of cancer-fighting drugs, are barely noticed by the cells they enter, according to a team of researchers led by Berkeley Lab’s Frank Chen. Using a high-throughput gene expression test, the team determined that the probes, which are specially coated quantum dots, only affect 0.2 percent of the human genome. This finding should quell concerns that the mere presence of these promising but potentially toxic sentinels disrupts a cell’s function, confounding quantum dots’ ability to accurately track cellular processes or monitor the effectiveness of pharmaceuticals. Unexpected Spam Reports

During the testing of a new spam blocking tool called IronPort, the IT Division inadvertently sent messages containing spam reports to some email users. Many recipients thought the emails looked suspicious and reported them following Lab cyber security guidelines. IT has corrected the reporting problem, and continues to test IronPort's spam-blocking capabilities.

BLI Offers Comprehensive
Course for Supervisors

The Red Wing Shoemobile, which formerly set up shop regularly in the cafeteria parking lot, is moving to a new location, starting tomorrow. The mobile shoe repair shop will now reside in the parking lot next to the Bevatron. Hours are 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
