Hubble Camera Back,
Shooting Supernova
After a brief hiatus, the Advanced Camera for Surveys aboard NASA's Hubble Space Telescope is back in business, probing the far reaches of space in a quest to understand the true nature of the universe's most dominant constituent: dark energy. Some of the first images taken were for the Supernova Cosmology Project, headed by Berkeley Lab's Saul Perlmutter. Full story.

Lab's Mercury Removal
Technology Licensed
Mobotec USA, Inc., located in Walnut Creek, has recently negotiated a license with the Lab's Technology Transfer Department to remove mercury from power plant emissions. The process was invented by Shih-Ger Chang and colleagues from the Environmental Energy Technology Division. This technology will help reduce the approximately 48 tons of mercury that U.S. coal-fired power plants emit each year.

Don't Forget: Blackberry Gate Work Starts Today
Crews will begin renovations at Blackberry Gate today. Traffic will be delayed in that area through late September, however, the gate will remain open during the entire project, including the visitor lane. The pedestrian walkway between the campus and Lab will remain open as well. The parking lot just below the gate will be closed off. Employees should use Grizzly Peak or Strawberry Canyon gates when possible, particularly in the mornings. Go here for more information on the construction, or contact Jack Heffeman (x5993).
