Update On UAW,
Postdoc Unionization
The effort on behalf of the United Auto Workers (UAW) to unionize Berkeley Lab postdocs continues. The Labor/Employee Relations Office has received questions from many postdocs about how the voting process is supposed to work. Postdocs who need more information are encouraged to attend a meeting today at 10 a.m. in the Building 50 Auditorium, or on Thursday, July 20 (same time and location). Go here to read more about the UAW/postdoc unionization voting process.
Bevatron Passes CD-1;
New Timeline Announced

With the recent Department of Energy approval of Critical Decision 1 (CD1), the deconstruction and decommissioning of the Bevatron took another step toward completion. A revised project strategy (DOE approved) will enable the work to be completed more efficiently and at a lower cost than originally anticipated, says Project Director Joe Harkins. "The new funding profile gives us an uninterrupted time frame," he said. That time frame, within a total budget of about $75 million ($15 million less than previously estimated), includes final design planning in 2008 and demolition work from 2009 through 2012. The projected completion date is about the same as in the original plan, though the start date is about two years later. The use of two mobile cranes for removal of the machine will help reduce the length of the project. The building that houses the Bevatron would be removed first under the revised plan, allowing greater access to the inner blocks and equipment.

UC Extends Military Supplement Pay
Under current University policy, eligible employees who are on active military duty may receive supplemental payments from the University to their military salaries, and a continuation of their UC health-plan benefits. Because it is the University's continuing desire to assist employees called to active military duty during current and related campaigns, the University has extended its policy until June 30, 2008. Information about the policy may be found here.
Vehicle Mileage
Reports Due
Vehicle custodians must e-mail their monthly mileage reports by July 20, since the pump computer system that usually provides this information is currently unavailable. Include the vehicle license number and the current mileage.

Dioxin Risk Depends

Dioxin, called one of the most toxic chemicals known to science, may not be quite as dangerous as once thought, says a report published Tuesday by the National Academies of Science. But the government won't know how dangerous it really is unless researchers change the way they're trying to assess the risk, the report says. The science academy is clear that dioxin is "likely to be carcinogenic in humans," but it says to know how carcinogenic, study techniques must be changed, said Environmental Energy Technologies' Thomas McKone, who served on the NAS panel that reviewed the toxin.
