Refinery Clears Air
To Grow Roses

by Jad Mouawad spacer

Farrell

A few miles north of Rotterdam, gardeners like Frank van Os are part of an unconventional experiment by Royal Dutch Shell to curb carbon emissions. Van Os produces four million roses each year, flooding the atmosphere inside his vast glass canopy with pure carbon dioxide to bolster his crop. What is unusual is that he now gets the carbon dioxide piped in directly from Pernis, a Shell refinery that typically discharges tons of the gas into the atmosphere every year. Climate experts — like Berkeley Lab Earth Sciences guest Alexander Farrell — estimate that overall carbon emissions from fossil fuels must be cut at least in half by 2050 to stabilize their effect on global warming. POLICY NOTE

Rules on Whistleblower
Reports, Protection

The Policy for Reporting and Investigating Allegations of Suspected Improper Governmental Activities ("Whistleblower Policy") governs reporting and investigation of allegations of suspected improper governmental activities. The University of California is also committed to protecting employees and applicants for employment from interference with making a protected disclosure or retaliation for having made a protected disclosure or for having refused an illegal order as defined in the Policy for Protection of Whistleblowers from Retaliation and Guidelines for Reviewing Retaliation Complaints ("Whistleblower Protection Policy"). Both policies represent the University's implementing policies for the California Whistleblower Protection Act (Government Code Section 8547- 8547.12). RESEARCH NEWS

Operon Life
Cycle Revealed

Price and Arkin
Price, left, and Arkin
Adam Arkin, a computational biologist in Berkeley Lab's Physical Biosciences Division, led a research effort that has yielded the first model showing the life cycle of operons, small groups of genes with related functions that are co-transcribed in a single strand of messenger RNA. This model should immediately benefit biologists who study bacteria, and in the future could also help the emerging field of synthetic biology, in which microbes are genetically engineered to make specific products, such as new medicines or pharmaceutical drugs. Collaborating with Arkin were Morgan Price and Eric Alm. Full story.
