Mathematician Gives Pi Advice to the 'Simpsons'

While David Bailey's research into the digits of Pi is well known, a little-known factoid resulting from this work came to light in the June 10 online edition of Science News. The column delves into the role of mathematics in "The Simpsons" TV show. In one episode, Apu claims he can recite Pi to 40,000 decimal places, with the last digit being one. To get that detail right, the show's writing team faxed a query to NASA, where mathematician David Bailey -- who worked for the agency from 1984-1998, before joining the Lab -- obliged with the digit in question.

Seven members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Parliamentary Assembly visited the Lab on Friday. The group, including members from Bulgaria, Poland, Iceland, and the United Kingdom, participated in talks with Lab scientists and administrators on the latest research taking place here, including energy efficiency, the Advanced Light Source, and climate change. They were also given a brief presentation on 75th anniversary events and activities.

The Lab will be closed tomorrow in observance of Independence Day. Due to this holiday, the cafeteria and coffee bar will close today at 1:30 p.m. and the shuttle bus service will operate on a reduced schedule, with one Bancroft bus running every 30 minutes, and one onsite bus every 20 minutes. Have a fun and safe day off.
