Lab Research Lauded
At Conservation Summit

Lab's energy-saving tool for vineyards honored
At the state Energy Conservation Summit held last Friday in Los Angeles, "Flex Your Power" awards were presented for the development of energy-saving strategies. Among the recipients were scientists in Berkeley Lab's Environmental Energy Technologies Division, in collaboration with the California Energy Commission and Fetzer Vineyards, for the creation of the "Benchmarking and Energy and Water Savings Tool," or BEST, which allows vintners to maximize energy efficiency and minimize operating costs. Go here to learn more about BEST.

Mathematician Gives Pi Advice to the 'Simpsons'

Bailey
Apu
While David Bailey's research into the digits of Pi is well known, a little-known factoid resulting from this work came to light in the June 10 online edition of Science News. The column delves into the role of mathematics in "The Simpsons" TV show. In one episode, Apu claims he can recite Pi to 40,000 decimal places, with the last digit being one. To get that detail right, the show's writing team faxed a query to NASA, where mathematician David Bailey -- who worked for the agency from 1984-1998, before joining the Lab -- obliged with the digit in question.

75TH ANNIVERSARY

Nuclear Medicine History Topic of Wednesday Talk

Brain PET scan
Thomas Budinger will present the second Summer Lecture on Wednesday at noon in the Building 50 Auditorium. His talk is entitled "Nuclear Medicine at Berkeley Lab: From Pioneering Beginnings to Today." Budinger, who heads Berkeley Lab's Center for Functional Imaging, will discuss the Lab's rich history pioneering the field of nuclear medicine, from radioisotopes to medical imaging. Among his many accomplishments, Budinger's work led to an extremely high resolution PET scanner that was built here in 1986.
