New Logo, Home Page For Lab 75th Anniversary

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Founder Ernest Lawrence launched the Radiation Laboratory, predecessor to Berkeley Lab, on August 26, 1931 in a small building on the UC Berkeley campus. Numerous activities and events are being planned to celebrate this historic year; look to the Jan. 20 issue of The View for more information. In addition, the Lab has a new logo to commemorate the occasion, designed by Caitlin Youngquist of the Creative Services Office. The logo will appear on Lab publications, stationery and home page. Three months after his initial choice of an industry lobbyist was rejected by environmental activists and Democratic legislators, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger yesterday appointed Robert Sawyer, a respected air-quality scientist, to chair the California Air Resources Board. The appointment of Sawyer — with Berkeley Lab's Environmental Energy Technologies Division — must be confirmed by the state Senate. Full story.

Takes Over in EH&S

This week marks both the start of a new year and the arrival of Berkeley Lab's new Acting Division Director for Environment, Health and Safety, Howard Hatayama. He has been Director of Environment, Safety and Health for the University of California Office of the President's Laboratory Management Office. At Berkeley Lab Director Steve Chu's invitation, Hatayama agreed to the Lab assignment in December following the repositioning of Phyllis Pei to a safety advisor role in Chief Operating Officer David McGraw's office. Hatayama has 30 years of professional experience in the environment, health and safety field, including service at state, national and international levels. Barletta
Gourlay

William Barletta, director of Berkeley Lab's Accelerator and Fusion Research Division for the past 12 years, is departing to become Director of the U.S. Particle Accelerator School (USPAS) headquartered at Fermilab. Barletta had also directed the Lab's successful proposal effort for the new University of California management contract. Steve Gourlay, a scientist in AFRD since 1997, has been appointed by Lab Director Steve Chu to be Acting Director of the division while a national search proceeds. Gourlay is head of the Superconducting Magnet Program.
