MESSAGE FROM DIRECTOR CHU

Work, Play Safely
During the Holidays

As we anticipate and prepare for the holiday season, we should plan with safety in mind. The increased demands on time and personal energy can lead to a higher risk of accident and injury, so it is important to be vigilant and prevent mishaps before they occur. One powerful feature of the Lab’s safety culture relies on employees looking after one another and identifying unsafe practices — this can be applied away from work as well.  Take time to ensure that your family, home, and work areas are safe during the holidays. Go here for some tips to help make your holiday season a safe and healthy one. Take a moment to read these tips and share them with your family and friends. Happy Holidays!

ANNOUNCEMENT

Industrial Supplies
Available Via eBuy

Starting Monday, industrial supplies and tools can be purchased from your desktop from S&S Tools using the eBuy procurement method. Users of industrial and MRO tools, equipment and safety supplies are urged to browse the S&S catalog and take advantage of institutional savings. eBuy is accessible here, as well as on the BLIS website, and the Procurement homepage (using Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari browsers). Using eBuy requires an LDAP, employee ID number, and a valid project ID number. No online registration or training is required.
COMPUTER UPDATES

Wide Area Network
Connection Upgraded

The IT Division will be upgrading LBLnet's wide area network connection on Tuesday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. During this period, traffic between the Lab and the Internet will be interrupted but internal Lab networking will not. For questions, call x4144 or x7913.

E-Mail Will be Down
On Sunday Morning

The IT Division will be patching Lab e-mail servers this Sunday from 8 a.m. to noon. E-mail service will be periodically unavailable during that time. For questions, call the IT Help Desk at x4357.
RESEARCH NEWS

Single Top Quark
Found at Fermilab

Oddone
The DZero collaboration at Fermilab, which includes scientists from Berkeley Lab’s Physics Division, has reported the first evidence of single top quarks. Previously, top quarks had only been observed in subatomic processes involving the strong nuclear force, which produces pairs of top and antitop quarks. This new result is an important test of theoretical predictions, and the techniques employed should help in the search of an even more elusive particle, the Higgs boson. "I am delighted by the DZero results and what they portend for the future," said Fermilab Director Pier Oddone. Full story.
HOLIDAY SHUTDOWN

Employee ID Badge
Required for Access

Employees who plan to come to the Lab during the holiday break are reminded that they must present their ID badges at the security gate in order to gain access. No exceptions will be made. Visitors will not be permitted to enter during the break. Forward any questions to Jim Breckinridge.

Reduced Services, Tips
On Preparing for Break

Minimum work forces will continue the following functions during the Lab's holiday shutdown (6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 22, through Monday, Jan. 1): plant operations, safety, animal care, hydrogen safety, and receiving and mail. IT services will be available with minimal support for critical outages only. Backups will only be provided for servers. Go here for more details on the shutdown.

Reminder: Special-Needs
Forms Due Today

Researchers requiring monitoring of experiments over the break, or who have special instructions in the event of a utility outage, are reminded that the forms requesting these services are due today. These forms and additional information are available on the Facilities website.
