City Adopts Nanoparticle Amendment to Code

Berkeley's City Council on Tuesday night unanimously passed an amendment to the City's Municipal Code on Hazardous Materials to include an annual report on engineered nanoparticles from organizations conducting nanotechnology manufacture and research. Berkeley Lab, which as a federal facility is not bound by city mandates, will voluntarily submit an annual report on the activities of the Molecular Foundry, including its methods for safe handling, and containing and disposing of research nanoparticles. The Foundry's work is conducted under the strictest federal guidelines and within the necessary constraints of the Lab's environment, health and safety protocols.
SPECIAL EVENT

Holiday Gifts At Craft
Fair This Afternoon

Be sure to stop by the cafeteria today between 3:30 and 6:30 p.m. for the Lab's annual craft fair. The fair features handmade items, including jewelry, art, baked goods, and clothing, which make ideal holiday gifts.
ANNOUNCEMENTS

Summer Lectures
To Air on UCTV

Hoffman
Several of the Lab’s 2006 summer lectures will be featured on UCTV’s Teacher’s Pet program in December. Darleane Hoffman’s talk on the discovery of the transuranium elements will air today, Andy Sessler’s lecture on 75 years of particle accelerators on Dec. 14, Art Rosenfeld’s lecture on energy efficiency research on Dec. 21, and Don Glaser’s lecture on the bubble chamber on Dec. 28. All broadcasts start at 4 p.m. The lectures can also be viewed online. Go here for a full schedule and to learn how to access the broadcasts.

Free Posters, 'Future'

Berkeley Lab's official 75th anniversary poster, and mission prospectus "A View to the Future," are again available for free in the cafeteria lobby. Supplies are short, so employees are urged to pick up their copies before the holiday break.
IN THE NEWS

First Segment of New
Internet2 Goes Live

Johnston
At its annual fall meeting and 10-year anniversary celebration, Internet2 unveiled the first major segment of its new nationwide advanced network. Bill Johnston, head of ESnet at Berkeley Lab, said, "Researchers around the country that collaborate using the ESnet facilities are demanding networks that provide high reliability, in addition to very high bandwidth to support their critical work in scientific discovery. The Internet2 infrastructure will provide these capabilities now and with its leading-edge technology can easily scale to meet the energy science community's future needs as well." Full story.

Outside Air Cooling
Fears May Be Unfounded

Tschudi
Berkley Lab is studying the use of outside air to cool data centers, focusing on whether two common fears — contaminants and humidity entering the room — are justified. The study is being sponsored by Pacific Gas & Electric, which offers rebates to customers who install outside air economizers in their data centers. William Tschudi, with the Lab's Environmental Energy Technologies Division, said the study includes seven data centers. Two of them will provide solid comparative data because they're in the process of installing economizers, providing the Lab with before-and-after measurements. The study started in April and should be done by the end of this year. Full story.
CLASSES/WORKSHOPS

Managing Proposals
In eRA Commons

Principal Investigators, post docs, and budget and administrative staff are encouraged to attend a brown bag lunch session on the new processes for submitting proposals to the National Institutes of Heath via Grants.gov.  Hosted by the Lab's Sponsored Projects Office and the Berkeley Lab Institute, the session will be conducted next Tuesday (Dec. 12) from noon to 1 p.m. in Perseverance Hall. NIH validation and acceptance of applications in NIH eRA Commons and information on other proposal actions will also be discussed.
