Life Sciences Paper Wins
’05 Measurement Prize

report cover
A paper by Berkeley Lab Life Sciences scientists Jonathan Maltz and Thomas Budinger has been selected for the Martin Black Prize for Best Paper Published in Physiological Measurement in 2005. Articles were selected for their presentation of outstanding new research, valuable reviews of the field, receipt of the highest praise from international referees, and the highest number of downloads from the journal website. The collection of 17 winning papers and topical reviews includes Berkeley Lab’s entry, entitled "Evaluation of Arterial Endothelial Function using Transit Times of Artificially Induced Pulses," and can be read here.

Is It a Time Machine?
Telescope? Ionizer?

None of the above, says visiting science teaching summer fellow Don Cameron. He is working this summer with Environmental Energy Technologies researcher Howdy Goudey on measuring transmission properties of glass and window shading devices. To do that, he uses an “integrating sphere,” which can be seen most days near Building 53. The sphere is six feet in diameter, uses the sun as a visual light source and is used to validate modeling software used by building designers.
POLICY UPDATE

Patent Requirements
For Outside Consulting

Patent seal
When a consulting or employment agreement containing a claim for invention and patent rights is offered to an employee, the outside organization must be advised, under the terms of the University/Department of Energy Contract, that the agreement must include specific language concerning University of California property and patent rights in order to obtain Laboratory approval. That language can be found here. Questions on inventions and patent articles in a proposed consulting agreement should be directed to the Technology Transfer Department.
75th ANNIVERSARY

Founders Day Tours
Limited, Require Sign-Up

Three Lab facilities — the Molecular Foundry, Advanced Light Source and 88-inch Cyclotron — will be conducting tours on Founders Day Saturday. Only a limited number of spots will be available, so guests must sign up at the Information Tent (lower cafeteria parking lot). Tickets will be given on a first-come first-served basis and will be collected by tour providers. Tickets will not be required for the Lab-wide shuttle bus tours. Visit the Founders Day program for facility and site tour times.

Know Your Lab: Trivia
Challenge Will Be Test

Another special feature of Founders Day Saturday will be a 10-question trivia contest about Berkeley Lab history. Entry forms will be available at the Information Tent. Winners will be announced and receive prizes at a brief 2 p.m. ceremony on the cafeteria outdoor stage. The Grand Prize — a two-night stay at the Rose Garden Inn in Berkeley — will be determined by a drawing in case of a tie.
ANNOUNCEMENTS

Annual Lab ‘Runaround’ Seeks Volunteers for ‘06

running shoes
The Berkeley Lab’s annual Runaround would not be possible without the help of a small army of volunteers. Coordinators are seeking volunteers for its committees, some of which also allow participation in the event as a runner or walker. To find out more visit the Runaround website. Then attend the first organizational meeting at noon on Tuesday, Aug. 29 in Perseverance Hall. Those who cannot attend but still wish to volunteer should send an e-mail to Steve Derenzo. Staff who served at past events are especially sought as participants and mentors.
