Physicist Receives
Guggenheim Award

Berkeley Lab physicist Carl Haber is among the 187 artists, scholars, and scientists selected from almost 3,000 applications to be a Guggenheim Fellow. Guggenheim Fellows are appointed on the basis of distinguished achievement in the past and exceptional promise for future accomplishment. Haber was honored for his work in optical methods to recover sound from mechanical recordings. Go here for more information on the Guggenheim awards. A story about Haber's research can be read here.

Earth Day Talk
On Turbines

Van Buskirk
Robert Van Buskirk, with the Lab's Environmental Energy Technologies Division, will screen a video he has produced on the construction of wind turbines in Eritrea today at noon in Building 50-5026. The turbines will bring power to several villages, some of which have never had electricity. A press release on Van Buskirk's work is available here. His talk is part of the Lab's Earth Day celebration.

Study on Renewable
Energy Credits

Renewable energy certificates (REC) are increasingly important, especially in states that accept them as evidence of compliance with renewable portfolio standards. The emergence of RECs as a tradable commodity has made utilities, generators and regulators increasingly aware of the need to specify who owns the RECs in energy transactions, according to a new report by Ryan Wiser and Mark Bolinger, with Berkeley Lab's Environmental Energy Technologies Division, and subcontractor Ed Holt. Full story.

Spots Still Open
For BLI Classes

The Berkeley Lab Institute has space in its April classes for employees interested in learning about Foreign Guests and Visitors (today), Bringing Technology to the Marketplace (April 18 and 25), Oracle Calendar (April 18), Elder Care (April 25) and Scientific Presentations (April 27). All the classes are free. Four Disciplines of Execution (April 26) costs $90. Go here for time, location and enrollment information.

Listen Up for Test
Of Lab PA System

The monthly test of the Lab's hill-wide public address system takes place tomorrow at 10 a.m. Contact your building manager or Nikki De Jager if you cannot hear it.

Drivers: Keep an Eye On Centennial Drive

The large amounts of rain over the past month have taken a toll on Bay Area roads, including Centennial Drive, which starts at the west end of Memorial Stadium on campus and runs past both the Strawberry Canyon and Grizzly Peak entrances to the Lab. Some damage to the shoulder of the road has occurred in this area, and the asphalt has become uneven in some spots. Crews are working to correct these issues, which at times may cause traffic interruption, over the next few months. Drivers can go here to get updates on access and repair work.
