Director Chu Sets Up
Decision-Making Groups

Berkeley Lab Director Steve Chu has announced the establishment of two groups that will serve as his primary senior advisory bodies in decision-making and strategy development. A four-person Cabinet will deal with time-sensitive issues on a near-daily basis, while a new Senior Leadership Council (SLC) will meet twice a month to address both tactical and strategic concerns. Drives Physics Staffer

Cheeseboro

Meet Sherri Cheeseboro, an administrative assistant for the Physics Division's ATLAS group for seven years. One of the things she likes most about working at the Lab is the relaxed academic atmosphere and plethora of employee activities. "I also love the fact that I see deer or turkeys," she said. "Not many can say that about their workplace." When she's not administrating, she plays percussion instruments with the Berkeley Lab Rhythm and Blues Band, and off-site with Apocalypso Now, which performs Caribbean and Latin grooves. Quantum-Computer
Calculations Simulated

Head-Gordon

Berkeley Lab and UC Berkeley researchers have simulated the process by which a quantum computer could calculate to high precision an important basic property of two small molecules. Simulated quantum calculations of the ground-state energies of water (H2O) and lithium hydride (LiH) are the first of this kind ever done for specific molecules. Lab researchers include chemical scientist Martin Head-Gordon and his graduate student Anthony Dutoi. Full story.

Lab Solano Stroll Booth Needs Volunteers

The Solano Stroll, a daylong festival in North Berkeley, takes place Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Each year the Lab sponsors a booth (Solano at Tulare St.) where visitors can stop by to learn more about the Lab. Volunteers are needed to staff the booth, particularly between 2 and 5 p.m. Before or after volunteering, employees can enjoy food and entertainment, some of which is provided by Lab employees, such as Sherri Cheeseboro (see "Faces at the Lab") and Martin Jara with the Information Technology Division, who will perform with the Cajun All Stars at noon, 2 and 4 p.m. Send e-mail here to volunteer.

Stories With The View

Berkeley Lab employees who have, are currently, or plan to assist in relief efforts in the areas hit by Hurricane Katrina are invited to share their stories in a story for the Sept. 16 issue of The View. Those who know of a staff member who is participating are also encouraged to contact the editor to share this information.

Marine World Tickets
On Sale Today

Weekend Power Outage
At 90 Complex Planned

Power outages affecting Building 90 and the 90 trailers are scheduled for this weekend, and Sept. 17-18. Both outages will last from 6 a.m. Saturday until 6 p.m. Sunday. For more information, contact Jim Murphy (x4175).

Sally's Alley
Closed on Saturday

Sally's Alley will be closed tomorrow from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. for repair of a water leak near the south end of Building 7. As the extent of the repairs becomes known, additional brief closures may be necessary during September. For further information contact Mike Elizalde at x6021.
