ALS Users' Public Talk:
Mysteries of Magnetism

Stöhr

Joachim Stöhr, Director of the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory, will give the annual Public Lecture of the Advanced Light Source Users' meeting on Oct. 20 at 7:15 p.m. in the Building 50 auditorium. Stöhr's lecture will provide a glimpse into the magic and science behind magnetism, including its long history and its use in modern society. He will also address leading issues in today’s magnetism research, such as the manipulation of electron spin. The lecture is co-sponsored by the Friends of Science. E-mail [email protected] or contact the Community Relations Office at x7292 for more information.

IN MEMORIAM

Tony Vuletich, Longtime
Lab Scientist, Passes Away

Vuletich

Tony Vuletich, a scientist who worked at Berkeley Lab from 1951 until his retirement in 2004, passed away on Oct. 7 at the age of 79. Among his many achievements, he made significant contributions to several medical imaging instruments, including the liquid xenon proportional wire chamber, and the Donner 280 crystal and Donner 600 crystal positron tomographs. “Tony Vuletich brought a wealth of experience and talent to any project he worked on. He was a pleasure to work with and solved problems that made life easier for the rest of the research team,” says Stephen Derenzo of the Life Sciences Division. Services will be held today at Oakland’s Chapel of the Chimes at 7 p.m. The funeral will be held tomorrow at Oakland’s Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 10 a.m.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

On-Site Traffic To Be
Stopped for Runaround

Shuttle buses and other on-site vehicles will be stopped at 11:45 a.m. Friday when the hill is turned over to the SHARES Runaround. Traffic will be able to resume around 1:15 p.m. upon completion of the event. The cafeteria parking lot will be blocked completely during the day, and the bus stop there will not reopen until around 2 p.m. The Bancroft shuttle bus will operate on the regular schedule, but from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., the bus will turn around at the Strawberry gate rather than at Building 62/66. Other off-site buses will run on the regular schedule throughout the day. For questions, call x4165.

SAFETY NOTE

EHS Offers Hard Hat
Safety Information

Hard hats are designed to protect the head from the force of an impact. To ensure that they provide the intended level of protection, hard hats must be regularly inspected for damage to the shell and suspension. Replacement hard hats, ratchet suspensions (4-point and 6-point) and browpads for Bullard hard hats are available at the central store located in building 78. Additional information on hard hat inspection procedures is available on the EHS Industrial Hygiene webpage. Contact Betsy MacGowan at x2826 for more information.
