Lab Hydrogen Fuel Research Gets Funding

Two Berkeley Lab projects are among the recipients of over $64 million in DOE funding aimed at making hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and refueling stations available, practical and affordable for American consumers by 2020. The funding, announced yesterday by Secretary of Energy Samuel W. Bodman, is divided among 70 research and development projects at more than 50 research organizations. The two projects, conducted by Materials Sciences Division researchers, include a synergistic approach to the development of new classes of hydrogen storage materials, and the development of nanocomposite proton conductors. At Summer Wellness Fair

The Lab's Health Care Facilitator Office would like to invite all employees to the first-ever "Summer Wellness Fair" next Thursday, between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on the cafeteria lawn. Activities include music, chair massages, body fat analyzers, and information on exercise and nutrition. Berkeley Lab 50th anniversary commemorative mugs will also be given away. Representatives from the Lab's Benefits Department, UC health plan providers, the YMCA, 24-Hour Fitness, and the Lab's Employee Activities Association will be on hand.   Also, the "Dental Mobile," a new service that will soon launch, will be open for tours.

Creative Services

Cheryl Ventimiglia, head of the Creative Services Office (formerly called the Technical and Electronic Information Department) will offer an overview of the services her group provides, including technical writing, design and illustration, photography, printing, and web development. The event takes place next Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon in Building 2-100B. Go here to register (ASD 9115).

Free Donner Library
Books Available

Many books and journals from the Donner Library on campus, which closed about two years ago, are available for free to scientists and staff here at the Lab. They will be offered next Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon and Tuesday, June 7, from 1 to 5 p.m. in Building 50B-2265. Book titles can be viewed and searched for here, and journals here. Items are on a first-come-first-served basis. There will be no delivery or setting aside of books. Employees should bring their own containers to carry the books.

Public Meeting Tonight
On Lab Clean-Up Plans

The State Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) will be holding a meeting and hearing tonight on proposed soil and groundwater cleanup plans at Berkeley Lab, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the North Berkeley Senior Center, 1901 Hearst Ave. The plans are part of a Draft Corrective Measures Study that has been open for public review since July 2004. The public is invited to comment on the proposed remedies until June 8. The study, fact sheets and other documents can be accessed here.
