Chu Among Nobelists
Testifying in Sacramento

Berkeley Lab Director Steve Chu is one of five Nobel Prize winners who, along with University of California President Robert Dynes, will testify today in Sacramento about the role UC plays and the impacts it makes on the state of California. The first of five scheduled hearings on the future of UC, it will take place at 1 p.m. before the Senate Education Committee's Subcommittee on Higher Education. This hearing is entitled, "Examining the Pressures That Threaten the University of California." J. Michael Bishop of UC San Francisco, Paul Boyer of UCLA, George Akerlof of UC Berkeley, and Sherwood Rowland of UC Irvine are the Nobelists who will join Chu at the hearing. Commencement Today;
Expect Traffic Delays

UC Berkeley's 2005 Commencement Convocation, an event to honor all graduating students, will take place today at 4 p.m. at the University’s Greek Theatre on Gayley Road near Memorial Stadium. It is scheduled to conclude shortly before 6 p.m. The amphitheater seats about 6,000 people, and major traffic delays are expected on Gayley for most of the afternoon and early evening. Employees are advised to take alternative routes.

Director's UC Davis Talk
Explores Energy Solutions

Today, the world relies on gas and oil to run its cities and transportation systems. But tomorrow, with the advancements in current research, it might be possible to grow plants that would provide viable energy for human use, according to Steven Chu, a Nobel laureate and director of the UC-managed Berkeley Lab. Chu spoke Monday afternoon to a packed lecture hall of students, faculty and the Davis community. His discussion, titled “A Possible Solution to the Real Energy Crisis,” explored options for the impending energy drought that will occur once oil and gas supplies are depleted. Full story.

The fourth and final tutorial in a series presented by the Distributed Systems Department will discuss "Tools and Techniques for Managing Large Scientific Software Projects" will be held from 1-4 p.m. Friday, in Perseverance Hall. Bush Urged to Triple Federal R&D Funding

Rep. Frank Wolf (R-VA) has sent a letter to President George Bush asking him "to develop the necessary consensus that will ensure America will remain the world's leader in innovation" by a "tripling [of] the innovation budget — federal basic research and development — over the next decade." Wolf is the chairman of the newly formed House Science, State, Justice and Commerce and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee. Go here to read the letter.
