Stand-Down Meeting
Stresses Foundry Safety

Following the latest of several accidents or near-accidents, Berkeley Lab on Wednesday mandated a "stand-down" work stoppage at the Molecular Foundry construction site to attend a meeting on safety. An incident last weekend involved a worker for a subcontractor who suffered a broken hand in a drilling procedure. Lab Director Steve Chu, the DOE's Berkeley Site Office, and an official representing the subcontractor addressed 170 workers on site Wednesday afternoon, emphasizing the importance of adhering to all relevant safety measures. Work resumed after the stand-down meeting, and the project team, including the subcontractor, recommitted to developing and implementing measures that ensure a safe and healthy workplace.

POLICY REMINDER

Patent Requirements
For Outside Consulting

When a consulting or employment agreement containing a claim for invention and patent rights is offered to an employee, the outside organization must be advised, under the terms of the University/Department of Energy Contract, that the agreement must include specific language concerning University of California property and patent rights in order to obtain Laboratory approval. That language can be found here. Questions on inventions and patent articles in a proposed consulting agreement should be directed to the Patent Department.
