Seismic Imaging Topic
Of 'Summer' Talk Today

The next installment of the Lab's Summer Lecture Series takes place today at noon in the Building 50 Auditorium. The guest speaker is earth scientist Barbara Romanowicz, who will discuss how she explores the deep structure and dynamics of the Earth using seismic tomography in a talk entitled "Seismic Imaging of the Earth's Interior." Next Wednesday, physicist Raphael Bousso will talk about "The World as a Hologram." The lecture topics for this summer's series were selected in conjunction with the international "World Year of Physics."

Berkeley Lab "Rats" included (L-R) Justin Glover, Fareedah Sabree, Teresa Ramsey, Karen Webster, and Heather Graham.

Lab 'Rats' Participate
In Sunday's AIDS Walk

Lab summer students and staff raised more than $1,000 selling baked goods near the cafeteria last week, which they donated to the AIDS Walk foundation. The 11-member group, dubbed the "Lab Rats," also participated in the annual walk through Golden Gate Park last Sunday. They wore white lab coats with "Berkeley Lab" written on the back. In all, the AIDS Walk raised $3.6 million. The "Rats" want to thank all those who donated money and volunteered their time.

HR's Schmidt Hires
Employees for Lab

Schmidt

Meet Arabella Schmidt. She has worked at the Lab for three years in the Human Resources Department's Workforce Planning and Employment group. She recruits employees for non-exempt positions. She is also the coordinator the Lab's Employee Activities Association (EAA), which sponsors various cultural and recreational clubs for staff. "I enjoy promoting employee morale," says Schmidt of her EAA duties. When not at work, she and her husband dote over their dog Malachi, going on long hikes with them, and participating in charity walks, such as the AIDS Walk, Bay to Breakers, and the Komen Breast Cancer walk. And they just got another dog, named Sasha.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Lab's Bicycle Coalition is among the groups in the EAA.

Meet The Clubs
At Noon Today

Representatives from the Lab's Employees Activities Association clubs will be on hand at the cafeteria today to share information and recruit members. Refreshments and entertainment will be provided. Go here for more information, or contact Arabella Schmidt, the association's coordinator.
