Loss of Tissue Structure
Can Lead to Cancer

Researchers in the Life Sciences Division have discovered a key molecular pathway by which an enzyme that normally helps remodel tissues initiates the pathway to breast cancer. The same molecular pathway, the researchers found, links both the loss of tissue organization in cancerous organs and the loss of genomic stability in individual cancer cells. "This study demonstrates how structure and function in a tissue are intimately related, and how loss of structure could itself lead to cancer," says life scientist Mina Bissell. Full story.

For Bioscience Battle

Universities nationwide are racing to lure top biotech scientists and research dollars, resources that could fuel one of this century's most promising industries. Perhaps nowhere is the outcome more crucial than in the bicoastal battle pitting Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology against Stanford and the University of California in San Francisco. The prize goes well beyond bragging rights. Billions in government-research dollars are up for grabs. Schools could earn millions in royalties paid by biotech start-ups licensing campus lab discoveries. Full story.

Spots Still Open
For Science Camp

Though the Science Exploration Camp at the Lab is about to start, there are still some slots open for children entering second to sixth grade in the fall. The camp features six weekly sessions, each with its own science-related theme. The sessions run from July 11 to August 19, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (the August 1-5 session is full). Pre- and post-camp childcare is available at no charge (7:45 a.m. to 5:15 p.m.). Go here for more information.

New Contract Number
For Document Notation

Divisional publications and other Berkeley Lab forms frequently require the DOE contract number as part of the documentation. For administrative and scientific staff who need it, the new number for the University of California management contract for the Lab is DE-AC02-05CH11231.
