Key Aging

Proteins Discovered

Kaufman
Fox Chase Cancer Center researchers have made discoveries that shed new light on the mystery of why human tissues, such as skin, age. The findings focus on the composition and assembly of key chromosomal protein complexes involved in shutting down reproduction of aging cells. The report by molecular and cell biologist Peter Adams and his colleagues appears in the January 2005 issue of Developmental Cell. Co-authors of the paper include Berkeley Lab life scientist Paul Kaufman. Full story.

DOE Website Helps
Lower Energy Bills

To help consumers grapple with ever-increasing energy costs, the Department of Energy has launched a new website with tips on how to save money by developing smart energy habits. The site serves as a consumer-friendly portal to detailed energy saving information, such as where to shop for Energy Star appliances, finding the cheapest gas stations, and fuel efficiency comparisons of the latest vehicles. Also included is a link to Berkeley Lab's Home Energy Saver website. Go here to access the DOE site and here for Berkeley Lab's site.

Campus Issues
Revised LRDP

UC Berkeley officials recently released the final version of its 2020 Long Range Development Plan, which outlines a new campus land use plan for the next 15 years. The final document retains the same guiding principles and policies from the draft, however several changes were made in response to public comments. These include the removal of plans for up to 100 units of faculty housing in the hill area of campus. Also, the projected 30 percent increase in parking has been changed to defer 500 of the 2,300 new parking spaces until after 2020 if AC Transit begins construction of a rapid transit route along Telegraph Ave. by 2010.
