The executive committee of the California Section of the American Physical Society recently named five new student awards after notable physicists, including Berkeley Lab Nobel Prize-winners Steve Chu and Luis Alvarez (1911-1988). Because the California Section is devoted largely to graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, the awards were named after physicists known for their educational outreach. The three other awards were named for Kennedy Reed (Livermore Lab), Margaret Burbidge (UC San Diego), and Charles Kittel (UC Berkeley).

Outdoors Club Hosts
Morning Run in the City

The Lab's Outdoors Club along with the Golden Gate Running Club will be hosting a run in San Francisco this Sunday. The event begins at 10 a.m. in front of the Warming Hut near the fishing pier in Crissy Field. Those interested in participating should contact Dinah Levy.

Employees can purchase bracelets, rings, necklaces and other quality jewelry items from Karats from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow in the cafeteria. These items make wonderful holiday gifts. Cash, checks and credit cards are accepted for payment. Employees receive an additional 10 percent discount.

Shared for SHARES

I would like to extend my appreciation, on behalf of Berkeley Lab and the benefactors of our employees' generosity, to everyone who contributed to the Lab's annual community charitable giving program, SHARES. According to final tabulations for the 2005 campaign, 122 donors contributed a total of $53,177. These donations are especially appreciated in this season of giving, recognizing the urgency for charity dollars that natural disasters such as Hurricanes Katrina and Rita created. Because many SHARES donations went to local non-profits, donors also helped to support Berkeley Lab's role as a "good neighbor" to the surrounding communities. Contributions to the Lab's "Shares" list of agencies — programs with compatible missions in education and science — totaled $12,547.

First 2006 Paychecks
Available on Jan. 3

In accordance with Internal Revenue Service regulations that restrict the number of paychecks that can be received in one calendar year, the first paycheck of 2006 will not be available until Jan. 3 (for both mailed and direct-deposit checks). If any employee receives a check or direct deposit prior to Jan. 1, it is considered income for 2005 and should be reported as such.

Over Holiday Break

Researchers needing special monitoring of experiments during the holiday break are reminded to include this information in the Special Needs memo submitted to Facilities by their building managers.
