The registration fee for Berkeley Lab and UC Berkeley employees has been waived for an Oct. 6 - 8 symposium honoring physicist and Nobel Laureate Charles Townes, who turns 90 this year and won the prize in 1964 in physics. The symposium, Amazing Light: Visions for Discovery, will feature Lab Director Steve Chu and scientists Raphael Bousso, Saul Perlmutter, Marvin Cohen, Marjorie Shapiro, Adrian Lee, and Donald Glaser. The registration deadline is Sept. 1. All registrants must check in with a valid UC Berkeley or Berkeley Lab ID to receive admittance and conference materials.

                          DOE Outlines Solar
                          Energy Research Needs

To help achieve the Bush Administration’s goal of increased use of solar and other renewable forms of energy, the Department of Energy’s Office of Science has released a report describing the basic research needed to produce “revolutionary progress in bringing solar energy to its full potential in the energy marketplace.” The report resulted from a workshop of 200 scientists held earlier this year. Genes-and-Cholesterol
                          Story on ‘Science Today’
Berkeley Lab Life Sciences researcher Paul Williams and his work studying genetic differences in twins is featured in this month’s schedule of one-minute syndicated CBS radio reports produced by the University of California’s Science Today. Williams’ work suggests that regulation of bad cholesterol is heavily influenced by genes, and that diet alone won’t necessarily affect a person’s success in controlling cholesterol levels.
