Berkeley Lab earth scientist Garrison Sposito has been selected to receive the Horton Medal — which recognizes outstanding contributions to the geophysical aspects of hydrology — from the American Geophysical Union (AGU), the world’s largest society of earth scientists. Sposito will be awarded the medal “for his seminal and extensive contributions in establishing the physical and chemical foundations of hydrology” at AGU’s annual meeting in San Francisco in December.

Calling All Notaries:
Let Operations Know

The Operations Division, which has the policy responsibility to maintain a list of current notary publics at Berkeley Lab, has asked that all notaries identify themselves to be part of the list. The Lab has a continuing need for legally authorized individuals who witness and certify documents or authenticate signatures. If you are a notary public, please send an e-mail to Jennifer Rosado in the Operations office.

Building 70A Parking,
Loading Dock Closure

The Building 70/70A loading dock area will be closed to vehicles and personnel tomorrow from 6 to 10 a.m. due to crane work. Spallation Neutron
Source Passes Test

With the recent "warm commissioning" of its linear accelerator, Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Spallation Neutron Source has passed a crucial test and milestone on its way to completion in 2006. In addition to Los Alamos and Jefferson Lab, four other national laboratories collaborate on the DOE Office of Science project: Oak Ridge, Argonne, Lawrence Berkeley and Brookhaven. Berkeley Lab completed the "front end," where the proton beam is initially generated. Full story.

EETD’s Steve Johnson is on the left. Jerry Simmons of Sandia Labs is on the right facing the camera.

Lighting Technology
Shines on Capitol Hill

Representatives from the Environmental Energy Technologies Division attended the Sept. 7 Energy Efficiency/ Renewable Energy Expo on Capitol Hill. Steve Johnson and Jeff Harris staffed a joint Berkeley Lab/Sandia Lab booth highlighting solid-state lighting technology, which gave Congress members and staffers an opportunity to see the Labs’ energy-efficient technologies. It's estimated that 800 people attended the event.

Highs: mid 60s (18° C).
