WORLD OF SCIENCE

Visa Clearance Rules
May Be Extended

The United States government is considering extending the validity of visa security clearances for international students, scholars, and scientists, according to comments made at a recent meeting of the Department of Homeland Security, the State Department, and science community stakeholders. But no definite changes have been decided on, nor has a timetable been set. This past May, several science, engineering, and educational associations, including NAS, AAAS, and the Association of American Universities joined in a complaint about the U.S. visa application process. Full story.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Survey: Should Lab Get ‘Web of Science’?

The Berkeley Lab Library has created a user survey to gauge demand for online access to Web of Science, a unique citation database index which provides a metric on whether a particular paper or author has been cited in other published works. Being able to determine this can help strengthen funding proposals. In order to fund this, a number of lesser-used journals would have to be cut to stay in budget. For a list of these journals that would be limited to online access, go here. Take the survey here. The deadline is next Wednesday.

Saturday Night Dance
To Feature Salsa, Rock

Today is the last day to buy advance tickets to this Saturday’s first-ever evening of dancing sponsored by the Lab’s Latino and Native-American Association (LANA) and Berkeley Lab Dance Club. Employees can purchase tickets at $15 per person, $25 per couple, in the cafeteria during the noon hour. The special cafeteria event will include a live band and DJ playing salsa, rock and pop tunes, plus hors d’oeuvres and refreshments. Dancing will continue from 7 to 11 p.m.

Parking Limited Today
In Two Lab Lots

Two laboratory parking lots will have limited space today – the U-5 Lot at Building 74/84 area, which is closed, and the K-1 Lot (cafeteria), which will have 15 spaces reserved.

COMPUTING UPDATE

Computer Users Cited For Anti-Virus Response

The Beagle.AQ worm has been spreading on the Internet, but not at Berkeley Lab, thanks to the good judgment and security awareness of Lab users. This new worm arrives as a message with a subject such as "foto" and an attachment such as "foto.zip." Those who open Beagle.AQ's attachment then infect their computers. But no one at Berkeley Lab did so, a credit to the users’ good judgment. As frequently stated, never open an attachment that you are not expecting, even if it appears to be from someone you know.
