NCEM's Uli Dahmen, left, and Butler

Dixon Butler, Democratic staff for the U.S. House of Representatives Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development, visited Berkeley Lab last Thursday. This was his first and most extensive visit to the Lab since visiting here several years ago as a NASA program manager. While here Butler met with Lab Director Steven Chu and Deputy Directors Sally Benson and Pier Odone. He also toured the ALS, NCEM and the Molecular Foundry, and enjoyed discussions with representatives of EETD, Life Sciences, JGI and SNAP. The Energy and Water Development Appropriations Subcommittee funds most of the Department of Energy, including the Office of Science.

PEOPLE

Saykally Wins
Lawrence Award

Saykally
The Department of Energy's Office of Science has presented the Ernest Orlando Lawrence Award in Chemistry to Berkeley Lab's Richard Saykally, principal investigator in the Chemical Sciences Division and chemistry professor at UC Berkeley. The award acknowledges scientists and engineers for their exceptional contributions to the development, use, or control of nuclear energy. The Lawrence Award pays tribute to Saykally's "invention of velocity modulation spectroscopy of molecular ions; for the development of far infrared vibration-rotation spectroscopy of radicals, clusters and carbon chains; for the elucidation of the structure and potential energy surfaces for water clusters; and for the development and application of cavity ringdown laser spectroscopy techniques."

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Planning Meeting
For Women's Forum

The Laboratory Women's Forum will be held at the Lab on Oct. 26 and 27. The gathering, "New Directions: Women of Influence in the National Laboratories," will bring together over 100 women from labs across the country. A brown-bag meeting for those on the Hill interested in attending will be held Thursday, Sept. 9, at noon in Building 90-2063. For more information, call Laura Chen at x6117.

Brown Bag Focuses
On E-Mail Encryption

Did you know that by default every e-mail message you send is in clear text and can thus be read by anyone who is snooping on Internet traffic? Jay Krous of the Computer Protection Program will discuss how to encrypt e-mail messages at noon on Thursday in Perseverance Hall.

Construction Begins On
Walkway Near Bldg. 71

Work to replace the pedestrian walkway on Chamberlain Road between Building 90 and Building 71 begins today and continues through the end September. About 100 feet of the old wooden walkway will be replaced. Parking on both sides of the road in this area will be restricted during construction. Pedestrian traffic will be directed around the construction area. Vehicular traffic will be redirected during construction activity and material deliveries. Extra caution is urged by drivers using this route to approach Building 90 at all times.
