Reminder: Brush Up on Your GERT Training

Here is a test for all lab employees: Do you know the meaning of the two radiation warning signs shown here, and the difference between them?

If not, then you need retraining in radiation protection. In fact, all on-site Berkeley Lab employees are required, by DOE regulation and Lab policy, to update their knowledge via General Employee Radiation Protection Training (GERT) every two years. This can be accomplished in two simple ways - via the Web or by paper copy review.

Federal regulation 10CFR835 requires EHS 405 for all on-site Berkeley Lab personnel, unless a higher-tiered course, such as radiation worker training, has been taken, or there has been a waiver (e.g. individuals working off-site). All new employees must complete GERT either on-line or by attending New Employee Orientation.

The on-line course can be taken by going to the EH&S Training web site here. Read through the GERT information and submit your employee number at the end for automatic course credit.

To review a paper copy, call the EHS Training Program office (X2228) and get a free copy of the GERT booklet. The eight-page pamphlet explains how to identify the radiation hazards, understand the radiation risks, and know how to properly avoid them. Pamphlets can also be acquired through Radiation Protection Group (x7652) or from your Division Safety Coordinator. To receive credit for reading a paper copy, fill out the GERT attendance roster and return it to MS51R-0208.

The EH&S Radiation Protection Group will send a representative to any Division or group of Lab employees desiring a classroom presentation for GERT or with any specific questions or concerns about the GERT training materials. Contact the Radiation Protection Group at x7652 with questions or comments.

(This information supplements that sent to most employees by e-mail last week. If you have recently taken GERT, then it is not required to take it again now).
