Regents Hear Plans
For Director Search

The University of California Board of Regents was given the timetable yesterday for the search to recruit a new Director at Berkeley Lab. Vice President Robert Foley told them a joint committee, which met at Berkeley Lab yesterday, and a screening committee headed by retired Lab physicist Bill Frazer, will filter the nominations to advise the President. A meeting on April 21 will select candidates for interview in early May, with an appointment expected on May 20 in San Francisco. Full story.

Eisen Wins Rave
Award From Wired

Eisen

Michael Eisen, a scientist in the Lab's Genome Sciences Division, recently received a "2004 Wired Rave Award" from Wired Magazine, for his work on the Public Library of Science, a nonprofit organization committed to making the scientific and medical literature a public resource. Eisen's colleague Patrick Brown, with Stanford University, also received the award.

Things Were 'Shakin'' at JGI on St. Paddy's Day

The Joint Genome Institute's (JGI) Employee Activities Committee combined their love of ice cream and St. Patrick's Day spirit for their first annual "Shamrock Shake" fundraiser. The volunteers used mint chocolate chip ice cream to make green "Irish" shakes. They went through nearly 10 gallons of ice cream and sold about 40 shakes. The group raised almost $80, which will help fund the JGI summer picnic holiday party. The group is planning other theme fundraisers. Details will be posted in Today at Berkeley Lab when confirmed.

BENEFITS UPDATE

UC-Managed Pension Plans Will Change

In April, the University of California will be implementing three major changes to the UC-managed funds: 1) The fund mix of the Multi-Asset Fund will change substantially and renamed the Balanced Growth Fund; 2) A new fund option, called the TIPS (Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities Fund) will be offered as both a component of the new Balanced Growth Fund and as a stand alone investment option; and 3) The Money Market Fund will be closed, and participant balances and future contributions will automatically be redirected to the Savings Fund. Go here for more details. A feature story on these changes will appear in the April 2 issue of The View.
