Enrique Iglesia Receives
Gas Conversion Prize
Enrique
Iglesia, a Chemical Sciences researcher and
professor of chemical engineering at UC Berkeley,
has been awarded the 2004 Award for Excellence
in Natural Gas Conversion. This award is given
every three years at the Natural Gas Conversion
Symposium and recognizes an individual who has
made “enduring and significant contributions
to science and technology for conversion of natural
gas to valuable products.” Iglesia will
receive the prize at the Symposium in June.

Parents Set for Academy
The
ASD Academy has room available in two of its upcoming
training courses ASD0214, “Franklin/Covey
Writing Advantage," Feb. 3, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.; and
ASD9028, “The Sandwich Generation Caring
for Aging Parents," Feb. 4, 10:30 a.m.-noon. Non-Administrative

Ticket Discounts
Available at Cafeteria
Ken Wan will be taking pre-orders for
corporate discount ski lift tickets this week at the
Cafeteria, from noon to 1 p.m. through Friday. Wan,
who is also looking for members to join the Ski and
Snowboard Club in the Employee Activities Association,
is offering ski tickets to Kirkwood ($48 adult, $39
junior), Heavenly ($52 adult), and Northstar-at-Tahoe/
Sierra-at-Tahoe ($47 Adult, $38 Young Adult, $13 Child).
Checks will be returned if the minimum ticket order

It's
Official: Contract
Will Be Competed
The
Department of Energy announced yesterday that it will
compete management and operations contracts for five
of its laboratories, including Berkeley Lab. The DOE
acknowledged its compliance with Congressional budget
language, in the Energy and Water Development Appropriations
Act of 2004. The stipulation was published in the Congressional
Record. Decisions on timing and procedures for the competitions

At Friday Groundbreaking

Rep.
Mike Honda, D-San Jose, will be a featured speaker at
this Friday’s groundbreaking ceremony for the
Molecular Foundry building. Honda is co-sponsor of the
Boehlert-Honda Nanotechnology Act of 2003, which authorizes
$3.7 billion over the next three years for nanotechnology
research and development programs. The program starts
at 11:30 a.m. outdoors (weather permitting) between
Building 66 and the National Center for Electron Microscopy.

laboratories. The first column discusses the issue of
industrial partners for both Los Alamos and Lawrence
Livermore national laboratories. It also mentions the
