See Mars in High-Res:
Images Shine on Grid

Chip Smith, of Berkeley Lab’s National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) desktop support group, is assembling images from the two Mars rovers and invites employees to view the material in the Access Grid Node (room 1211) on the first floor of Bldg. 50B. The high-resolution display area and 12 feet of diagonal screen closely match the resolution of the original imagery.
Some of the images are in 3D, with special viewing glasses provided. The program will run Monday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons at 4:30, 5 and 5:30 through the week of Feb. 16.

COMPUTER UPDATE

Windows Users —
Watch Out Again!

Still another new worm, the Novarg worm, is infecting Windows systems that are connected to the Internet. This worm arrives as an attachment with a subject that indicates there has been an error in the mail delivery system, making it look as if a message sent by a user has "bounced." Opening the attachment causes systems in which anti-virus software is not properly updated to become infected. Ensure that your Windows system is running updated anti-virus software and do not open or forward any attachment that you are not expecting. Go here for more information about this worm.

WORLD OF SCIENCE

E.T., Are You There?
Alien Search Explored

The arrival on Mars of NASA's rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, and the space initiative of President Bush, have revitalized one of the most compelling and oldest questions in all of science: Are we alone? Planetary scientist Roger Grinspoon looks at the history, science and fantasy behind our search for E.T. in his newest book, Lonely Planets: The Natural Philosophy of Alien Life. A review of the book in the San Jose Mercury News by Berkeley Lab’s Lynn Yarris can be read here.
