Lab, Fermilab, Meyer Tool Team For Hadron Project

Berkeley Lab and Fermilab have announced the completion of a key component of the U.S. contribution to the Large Hadron Collider, a particle accelerator under construction at CERN, in Geneva, Switzerland. After a competitive bid process, Berkeley Lab awarded Meyer Tool and Manufacturing, a female-owned small business in Oak Lawn, Illinois, the contract to manufacture eight cryogenic distribution boxes — components of the cooling system for the new accelerator — which is due to begin operating in 2007. Meyer Tool has completed the first box. Full story.

SAFETY NOTES

EH&S Offers Tips
For Safe Holidays

The holiday season is a time when many people gather together with family and friends. To make that time as safe and enjoyable as as possible, the Environment, Health and Safety Division has provided some tips on preventing fire, electrical and driving accidents. Go here to view the tips, and feel free to share them with your loved ones. Here's hoping your holiday is an injury-free one.

Limit Alcohol Intake
For Safe Traveling

The Lab's Health Care Facilitator would like to remind employees to keep an eye on alcohol consumption during the party-rich holiday season. Traditionally, there is a huge jump in the number of alcohol-related auto fatalities during the month of December. If you plan to drink, be sure to designate a non-drinking driver for transportation, or call a cab. More information on the hazards of drinking and driving is available on the National Commission Against Drunk Driving website. The Lab also provides free alcohol and drug counseling for all employees and their dependents through CARE Services, located at UC Berkeley's Tang Center (643-7754).

ANNOUNCEMENTS

January Paychecks
Available Jan. 3

Due to IRS rules and regulations that are very strict on income received at year end, the January paychecks will not be available until Jan. 3. If any employee receives a check or direct deposit at any time before Jan. 1, it is considered income for 2004 and should be reported as such. This would result in thirteen paychecks for 2004. Jan. 1 and 2 are bank holidays, so all checks will be available on Jan. 3 at the appropriate mail stops. All direct deposits will be posted in employee accounts on Jan. 3.

Science Photo Gallery
Featured on '05 Calendar

Berkeley Lab's 2005 planning calendar, produced by the Public Affairs Department, features 12 different views of Laboratory science as captured by photographer Roy Kaltschmidt of the Creative Services Office. The black-and-white images, one for each month beginning in December 2004, highlight a broad range of research fields for which the Lab is known. Copies of the calendar can be ordered through the Central Stores department for about $2 each.

AV Services Now Limited
To Three Major Rooms

Starting on Jan. 1, the Lab's Audio-Visual Services for conference rooms will be limited to the Building 50 auditorium, Building 66 auditorium and Perseverance Hall. The service will continue to be provided by ITSD through its Networking and Telecommunications Department, which now oversees Audio-Visual Services. Contact [email protected] for services in these rooms. As in the past, services include rental equipment and in-room LCD ceiling mounted or booth projectors. Services in support of the smaller conference rooms, and the provision of rental laptops and portable LCD projectors to these locations, will be discontinued. Call x6068 for more information.
