SNAP Might Become Part of NASA Mission

Physicists are shooting for the stars in a bid to understand the mysteries of dark energy —the enigmatic force behind the Universe's accelerating expansion. In a ground-breaking collaboration, the Department of Energy (DOE) has teamed up with NASA to plan a series of launches that will explore this exotic area of astrophysics. The proposed Joint Dark Energy Mission could reach the launch pad around 2014 and, although it is not yet funded, it has strong political backing. And although an instrument such as Berkeley Lab's SuperNova Acceleration Probe (SNAP) would not automatically be selected for the mission, it would be a strong contender. Full story.

'91 Oakland Fire Victims Offer Advice, Compassion
by Rick DelVecchio

Matis

Those who lost homes in the Southern California wildfires now face the task of recovery and rebuilding, an ordeal that can last years and strain every resource, victims of the 1991 East Bay hills fire said Tuesday. "It's a profound experience," said Howard Matis of Oakland, a nuclear scientist at Berkeley Lab. Matis was a 1991 fire victim who moved into his new house on the same spot 30 months after the disaster. Full story.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Lab's Main Web Server
Offline for Maintenance Tonight

The Lab's main web server, www.lbl.gov, will be down for emergency preventative maintenance tonight, Thursday, 10/30/2003, from 7:30PM to 10:00PM. This outage will affect various services directly hosted by www.lbl.gov, such as the web interface to IMAP email, and the web interface to Calendar. NOTE: Desktop client access to IMAP email and Calendar will not be affected. Department and division web servers that are not hosted by www.lbl.gov will not be affected, though links to them from the main Lab web server will be unavailable.

'Edge' Students to
Visit Lab Saturday

The Berkeley Edge Conference, an annual meeting designed to encourage underrepresented minority students to consider UC Berkeley for graduate work, will include Berkeley Lab in this year's program. On Saturday morning in the cafeteria, about 54 students and their sponsors from throughout the nation will visit the Lab to interact with scientists and administrators, present a poster session, and participate in a discussion on funding for graduate students. Go here for more information.

Revised Notice for EIR
On LRDP Is Released

Berkeley Lab’s reissued Notice of Preparation for a draft Environmental Impact Report on the Lab’s forthcoming Long Range Development Plan (LRDP) has been released to the public and can be read here. Comments will be recorded at a Scoping Meeting on Monday, Nov. 17 in the multipurpose room of the North Berkeley Senior Center, 1901 Hearst St.

'Wonderfest' Dialogues
Address Science Topics

Wonderfest 2003, a Bay Area Festival of Science, will take place at UC Berkeley on Saturday, Nov. 1 and at Stanford on Sunday, Nov. 2. Sponsored in part by Cal's Physics Department, Wonderfest features a series of 90-minute dialogues between pairs of distinguished researchers about timely scientific topics. For example, the Berkeley sessions, in Pimentel Hall, are entitled "Is the Universe Infinite?", "Will We Ever Go to the Stars?", and "Do We Understand Human Emotion?" Tickets are $9 per session, or $20 for a day pass, with discounts for students. Go here for more details.
