Barcellos-Hoff

Lab Scientists Speak at Breast Cancer Conference

Berkeley Lab Life Sciences Division Director Joe Gray, and staff scientist MaryHelen Barcellos-Hoff, will speak at the 24th Congress of the International Association for Breast Cancer Research held Nov. 1 - 5 in Sacramento. On Monday, Gray will moderate a session on preclinical trials, as well as discuss research involving comparative genetics and genomics of cancer. Also on Monday, Barcellos-Hoff will discuss her work exploring TGF-ß's role in mammary development and carcinogenesis. Go here for more information on the conference.

Nano*High Opens
in November

There’s a new place for high school students to hang out on Saturday mornings, beginning in November. Thanks to the staff of the Molecular Foundry, a series of seven one-hour talks and tours focusing on nanotechnology will inaugurate “Nano*High” at the Lab on Nov. 22. The asterisk (*) explains the nature of the field – “a human hair is 50,000 nanometers across.” Read more in The View on Nov. 14, or go here for information on how to register for the 10 a.m. talks in the Building 66 Auditorium.

Shank Gives Talk On Lab History

The ASD Academy is hosting “What Made the Berkeley Lab What it is Today,” presented by Director Charles Shank, this Friday, from 11 a.m. to noon, in the Building 50 Auditorium. Avoid the Flu

Health Services is offering flu and pneumonia shots tomorrow and Nov. 6, between 8 a.m. and noon, in Building 26. The cost for a flu immunization is $20, and $25 for pneumonia. Call x6266 to make an appointment.

 

DOE Illness Claim Center
Returning to Bay Area

Current and former DOE workers and contractors interested in filing claims for medical assistance for illnesses due to radiation, silica or beryllium exposure at work can visit one of two joint DOE -U.S. Department of Labor Traveling Resource Center that will visit the East Bay Nov. 18 and 19, and also Jan. 20-21 and March 23-24, 2004. Representatives can assist individuals with claims under the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act. Go here for additional information.
