Lab Web Site Gets
A Little Freshening Up

Berkeley Lab’s home page has received several upgrades designed to make it more attractive and user-friendly. Among the new elements are streamlined links on the left side, an updated photo collage, faster access to Lab information sites, and a reworked news list on the right side. Some new sites, like those in Public Affairs, have also been added. A new Operations link – for one-stop access to Lab resources -- is also planned. Check out the modernized look here.

EUV Lithography Tops
R&D Editors’ List

A team of national laboratory and industrial researchers that journeyed to Chicago last week to pick up their R&D 100 award received a surprise – another special award. Scientists from three national labs – Berkeley, Livermore, and Sandia – and partner Northrup Grumman were honored for their new tool, the Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography (EUVL) Full-Field Step-Scan System. It represents a revolutionary lithography breakthrough that will enable dramatic improvements in computer chip speed and memory during the next decade. The EUVL researchers received one of three “Editor’s Choice” awards for the most outstanding achievement among the 100 award winners.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Appointments Now Open
For Lab Fall Blood Drive

The American Red Cross Blood Services and Berkeley Lab are asking employees to donate a unit of blood during the Fall Blood Drive next week. Contributions are needed to help communities be better prepared for seasonal blood shortages and emergencies. Appointments are being taken for Nov. 5 (8 a.m.-2 p.m.) and Nov. 6 (7:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.) via the BeADonor website here using company code “LBL”. Walk-in donors are accepted on a space-available basis, usually best after 10 a.m. Donors must be in good health, at least 17 years old and 110 pounds. For more information, contact Charlotte Bochra at 4268.

Task Force Completes
Report on DOE Science

Rarely has a 25-page report offered so many important findings and
recommendations about the conduct of federally-supported science. The just-released final draft report of a task force of the Secretary of Energy Advisory Board is must reading for those interested in the importance of the DOE Office of Science and the
physical science research it supports. Public comment is encouraged. Read the American Institute of Physics’ summary here; the full report can be accessed here.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Brief Internet Disconnect
Set for 5 p.m. Today

The Lab’s LBLnet Services Group will do some router maintenance at 5 p.m. this afternoon, resulting in a loss of connectivity to the Internet from Berkeley Lab. The outage is expected to last about 15 minutes. Connectivity within LBLnet will not be affected. For information concerning this maintenance, call 4559.

Building 90 Ventilation
Improvements to Begin

The first phase of the Building 90 Ventilation Improvements Project is scheduled to start on Wednesday. Duct sealing will be done by Carrier Corporation utilizing Aeroseal technology developed by Berkeley Lab scientist Mark Modera (see story here). The impact on occupants of the building should be minimal, since work will occur in the evenings and on weekends. Postings throughout the building list scheduled dates and locations for the work, to be updated daily. For more information, contact building manager Guy Kelley (4703) or project supervisor Matt Hilburn (7270).

Workshop Tomorrow
On Lab Clean-Up Plan

The California Department of Toxic Substances Control will hold a public workshop tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. about the status of Berkeley Lab’s Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) corrective action process. The community is invited to review the Lab’s health and ecology risk assessments and discuss them at the meeting, set for the North Berkeley Senior Center, 1901 Hearst Street. The reports are available in the Building 50 library, as well as the Berkeley City Library. Read DTSC’s summary here.
