Rural
China Choking
On Indoor Air Pollution

Sinton |

The
problem of urban air pollution in China has been widely documented,
and there is little doubt that many of the nation's major cities have
severe air quality issues. But many people in rural China face a serious
and less reported indoor air pollution problem and addressing the
issue is far from easy...Even within the context of a program considered
a success in putting cleaner cook stoves in the homes of rural Chinese,
cultural and political hurdles still pervade, explained Jonathan
Sinton, a scientist with the Lawrence Berkeley Lab's China Energy
Group. Full

HENP Report Cites Neutrinos, SNAP
The Office of Sciences lastest High Energy and Nuclear Physics
(HENP) brochure, Exploring Matter and Energy, is off the
presses, and this years version notes the neutrino discoveries
of 2002 as watersheds for the program. Berkeley Lab scientists participated
in those discoveries and designed the inner structure of the Sudbury
Neutrino Observatory (SNO). The Lab is also featured in the new
directions section with an enthusiastic mention of the SuperNova
Cosmology Project (SNAP). The report can be read here. |

Carrier
Aeroseal LLC, a subsidiary of Carrier Corporation, recently
signed two new licensing deals that will enable it to use
Berkeley Lab aerosol duct-sealing technology in commercial
buildings as well as residences. Estimates show duct sealing
procedures can result in national energy savings of $30 billion
for residential sealing alone. Now the work of Mark Modera
and colleagues will move into commercial HVAC systems. Full

On Dinner Service
A reminder that the Lab is considering a dinner service in the
Cafeteria for employees working swing or late shifts, as well as
those who might occasionally want to bring a dinner home. Anyone
interested in this service has the opportunity to offer feedback
by filling out the Cafeteria's
online survey. |
