High Rank for Lab in
Supercomputer List

Berkeley Lab recently clinched the ninth spot in the TOP500 Supercomputer Sites bi-annual ranking. The list was announced this past weekend during the SC2003 conference in Phoenix, AZ. The TOP500 project was started in 1993 to provide a reliable basis for tracking and detecting trends in high-performance computing. Twice a year, a list of the sites operating the 500 most powerful computer systems is assembled and released, compiled with the help of high-performance computer experts, computational scientists, manufacturers, and the Internet community. Go here to see the entire list.

Next ‘Friends of Science’
Lecture on Thursday

Alper

Mark Alper — deputy head of the Materials Sciences Division and the Molecular Foundry — will discuss “Your Body as a Machine: A New Way to Look at Biology” at the next “Friends of Science” presentation on Thursday, at 5:30 p.m. in Perseverance Hall. Alper’s lecture will explore how living organisms use biological molecules and “machines” to promote their functions and survival. The talk is free, but reservations are required. Go here for more information on the lecture series.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Open Enrollment
Info and Assistance

Lab employees have only 13 days left to make changes to their health care plans. Open Enrollment ends at midnight on Sunday, Nov. 30. The Benefits Office is sponsoring one last information session tomorrow in Building 50 from 10 a.m. to noon. And assistance with using the new online system will be offered for the last time on Nov. 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the Building 51 computer lab. As a reminder, staff that want to participate in the Dependent Care or Health Care Reimbursement Account in 2004 must re-register during Open Enrollment.

COMPUTING UPDATE

Urgent Announcement
On Computer Protection

A wave of new viruses is attempting to trick Berkeley Lab computer users into revealing personal financial information. The most recent virus claims to be from Paypal, an online payment company. It is important to remember that unscrupulous individuals can use information such as credit card data to run up charges. Unless you know for certain with whom you are corresponding, do not reveal personal information via e-mail or the Internet. For more information, go here, or send an e-mail to the Computer Protection Program at [email protected].

Warning: Use Caution When Opening E-mail

Employees who receive e-mail advertised as a patch for a vulnerability or an "immunity program" from what appears to be a vendor (such as [email protected]), should not open these messages. These apparent "patches" and "immunity programs" are often viruses or “Trojan horses” that may infect your computer system. These can also come in the form of "greeting cards" that tell you to click on a link, or messages advertising free movie tickets. Those who receive these types of messages should immediately send e-mail to [email protected]. Additionally, staff should run and frequently update the anti-virus software on their systems.

Lab Part of U.N.-Funded
Energy Standards Effort

The Environmental Energy Technologies Division is a partner in CLASP – the Collaborative for Labeling and Appliance Standards Program – and the group has just announced a United Nations-funded effort to develop appliance labeling and energy efficiency standards in developing countries. The program will work in alliance with the Department of Energy’s Efficient Energy for Sustainable Development program. CLASP also includes the Alliance to Save Energy and the International Institute for Energy Conservation.

Scrutiny of Mutual Funds
Won't Impact UC Portfolio

The University of California Treasurer's Office has issued a statement indicating that a mutual fund investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) will not impact investments of retirement funds for UC employees. Prompted by employee questions regarding the safety and reliability of retirement-related investments in light of recent press coverage of the SEC scrutiny, UC said last Wednesday that investment portfolios managed by the Office of the Treasurer do not hold mutual funds. This includes the UC-managed portfolios in the University of California Retirement Plan, as well as the Defined Contribution and 403(b) Plans.
