Bancroft Bus Route Will
Change Starting Monday

The Lab's off-site shuttle bus schedule will change beginning Monday, with the elimination of the Strawberry bus and the increase in frequency (every 15 minutes during daytime hours) of the Bancroft buses. The Bancroft route will also change to begin and end at the Building 62/66 bus stop via Centennial Drive and the Strawberry Gate. Bancroft buses will no longer travel across the lab to the Building 65 bus stop. The Hearst route will remain the same. These changes are being made to accommodate travelers' needs from the south end of the Hill. Passengers should look for a large red "B" on the windshield of the Bancroft buses. See a route map and schedule here.

U.S. Energy Projects
Favor Local Labs
By Andrea Widener

Bay Area research labs got a big boost Monday when the Secretary of Energy unveiled his priorities for major research projects that his agency hopes to fund during the next two decades. Among the agency's 28 top priorities are a major computer expansion and an experiment examining the expanding universe, which could be housed at Berkeley Lab; and a powerful X-ray laser planned for the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. WORLD OF SCIENCE

All the Science
That’s Fit to Print

The first issue of Science Times appeared 25 years ago, on Nov. 14, 1978. Its guiding principle ever since has been that science is not a collection of answers, but a way of asking questions, an enterprise driven by curiosity. To celebrate the anniversary, we pose 25 of the most provocative questions facing science, including: “Does Science Matter?,” “Will Humans Ever Visit Mars?,” and “How Does The Brain Work?” Full story.

EMPLOYEE RECOGNITION

Let Them Eat Ice Cream Sundaes

Deputy Director Sally Benson laid down the bet, and the Facilities Division employees rose to the challenge. If they could go 30 days without a reportable injury, she would treat them to ice cream sundaes. Nov. 4 marked the 30th day, so facilities staff gathered in the cafeteria on Monday to reap their reward. “It’s a creative way to motivate our employees to think about safety…and almost everyone likes ice cream,” said Division Director George Reyes. No sooner had his staff finished the last bite of ice cream than he offered up a new challenge: three months without a reportable injury, and they get a free barbeque lunch.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Important Open
Enrollment Dates

Open Enrollment is now in full swing, and the Lab’s Benefits Office has scheduled an information session for tomorrow, from 2 to 4 p.m., in Building 50’s auditorium. Also, employees needing assistance with the new online system of making changes to health plans can visit the computer lab in Bldg. 51L from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Nov. 18 and 25. Computer access is also available at the ASD Academy, by reservation (call x6907), in the second-floor reception area of Building 6 and the first-floor lobby of Building 937.

Making Our World a
