Perlmutter

Saul Perlmutter has been awarded the 2003 California Scientist of the Year by the Los Angeles-based California Science Center. Perlmutter, a member of Berkeley Lab's Physics Division and leader of the international Supernova Cosmology Project based here, is honored for his work demonstrating the universe is expanding at an accelerating rate. Perlmutter receives $5000 and will be feted May 8 at an evening reception followed by a formal banquet held at the Science Center. The California Science Center established the award in 1958 to recognize the prominent role California plays in scientific and technological development.

Vigil, Forum Scheduled
On Berkeley Campus

UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Berdahl, in a memo to campus personnel, has urged that the campus be "a free and open space where differing points of view are addressed and where individuals engage in rational debate" in a peaceful manner during this period of impending war. And he noted two special events: a vigil on Sproul Plaza at 8 p.m. on March 31, sponsored by the University Religious Council and the ASUC, with speakers and music; and a forum on the implications of war, featuring a panel of UC Berkeley experts, at 7:30 p.m. April 1 at Zellerbach Hall. Read the full memo here.

Hallway Gallery in 50A
Displays Science Covers

Image of Cell magazine cover
Berkeley Lab research that has been honored by its placement on the covers of science journals is featured in a series of wall posters installed along the hallway in Building 50A, Fourth Floor. Science, Nature, Cell and other notable magazines are included in the display of Laboratory images, most of them published in the last few years. Lab employees are invited to visit the exhibit and suggest past or future cover artwork that might be added to the collection.

Research Team Sets
Data Speed Record

A handful of research bodies around the world, including Stanford Linear Accelerator Center and Los Alamos National Laboratory, published record network speed results this week, showing a huge boost in the flow of data across both wide area networks and between local systems linked closely together. The scientists teamed up to set a new record for sending data from the U.S. to Europe, in part by using new 10-Gigabit Ethernet networking cards from Intel Corp. Full story.
